Technological advances are causing old conveniences to fall into disuse. With digital wallets, such as Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet, emerging and getting popular, even the payments made through a card are now being done via smartphone. People only need access to a device with the application available to access these facilities. Nowadays, this technology is becoming popular, and many states are opting for digital documents, making life easier for citizens and centralizing access to personal information. Recently, this state decided to follow this trend and joined the digital license club.

With this bill, drivers can get a digital version of their license

With the growing popularity of digital wallets, these applications have become important allies for governments looking to centralize citizens’ personal information. Increasing the portability of documents and the storage of personal information, applications such as Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet quickly gained visibility and became recognized as a secure way of storing personal data.

Recently, some U.S. states have chosen to provide digital versions of documents issued by them. Once the initiative proved effective, it became popular throughout the country, and other states started to deploy the successful tactic.

Drivers from this state are allowed to get a digital version of their license

After House Bill 296 in the Georgia State Legislature came into effect, drivers who had their license issued by Georgia can use their mobile driver’s license or ID card in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet. The Digital License and ID is a free and optional service provided to eligible customers, and is not mandatory, but is an alternative for those who prefer to keep their documents in one place. But be aware, according to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, the Georgia Digital License and ID is not a replacement for the physical card when the person is operating a vehicle.

Going further, a partnership between the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the State of Georgia and Apple, deployed a new technology that will allow passengers to use their Georgia-issued mobile drivers’ license or ID card in Apple Wallet to verify their identity for airport security screening purposes at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). At the same time, while Georgia joins Maryland, Arizona, and Colorado to offer this facility, another U.S. state is facing problems due to the low adherence to the Real ID.

This facility is available for Apple Watch and iPhone, and this is how it works

The terminal that allows this use is located at the ATL T-South airport security checkpoint, but to make use of this facility, it is necessary to be enrolled in TSA PreCheck and use a designated checkpoint lane. To present their ID in Apple Wallet, passengers will simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the TSA’s Credential Authentication Technology reader at the travel document checking podium.

Next, the passenger devices will display the information being requested, and only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID, the requested info will be released from the device. After that, the TSA officer will verify the passenger’s identity and flight status for security reasons.

Be aware of this information if you want to use this method

If you intend to use your Apple Wallet to verify your information at the airport, be sure to complete the process of adding an ID to your Apple Wallet before arriving at the TSA checkpoint. Also, this technology will be available only for passengers with TSA PreCheck added to their boarding pass. Also, all the users must be aware that additional documentation might be necessary during this process, so keep all your info with you to avoid any type of problems. It is also good to remember that U.S. states are already relying on the Real ID for the procedure of onboarding in domestic flights.
