The shocking truth behind our consciousness has been revealed to us, in a way. Researchers have just made a truly remarkable discovery that has changed our understanding of how our consciousness works within our brains. For as long as we have been studying science and our own biology, the biggest question has always been regarding our consciousness and how it works. What was once thought to be the tried and tested theory has been challenged by this new discovery and has the world’s scientist exploring a whole new avenue.
How long have we been studying our minds and consciousness?
In 1877 scientists began to hypothesize that there could be a conscious and unconscious aspect of the mind, which started us down the rabbit hole of self discovery. The hypothesis being proposed at the time had a limited process of either confirming or disproving a possible answer. Only with the beginning of the 20th century did we evolve the science further enough to make significant progress.
In the 1990’s the efforts of one Francis Crick in neuroscience led to him receiving a Nobel Prize. While his predecessors were against the study of our conscious and unconscious minds, they could do little to stop it. And after some decades of study, advancements in theory were made. But that is all they are, theories. Our previous understanding of consciousness was based on limited research. Advancements in scientific research always benefit humanity.
After the latest findings, we are now able to explain some of the possible ways in which our consciousness works. Previous belief systems are being challenged, as is the way of scientific research. When a hypothesis is proposed, it is the duty of other scientists to either confirm or disprove the findings in the process known as peer review. Once a theory can be confirmed by multiple sources, it becomes provable and the prevailing truth.
What have researchers discovered in our brains regarding consciousness?
What makes these new findings so special is that it provides some possible answers to questions that the scientific community has been unable to answer. How does consciousness move about our brains? The current theory is that it happens via neuron-to-neuron communication during the synaptic firing. This was considered the most reasonable answer as to how does our consciousness travel in the brain.
A new article has posed a theory based on the electromagnetic fields that are created during synaptic firing. That they are more than simply a by-product. They are the actual pathways that we use to think. After some researchers conducted a test on some mice, they were able to make an amazing observation that has the world shocked as to where our consciousness goes and how it goes there. It appears the answers have been hiding in our brains all along.
Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University in Ohio completely bisected the hippocampus of a mouse. And what they found is that the team still recorded activity that could “leap” across the cut—a phenomenon only possible through electric field coupling. Even after the mouse was split open, the electromagnetic field was able to jump across the cut to the other side of the brain.
What can we find in our DNA and in our brains next?
The advancements in scientific research has allowed us to make significant discoveries in an attempt to understand our own biology. The world has wondered for centuries about the nature of existence and in turn our own consciousness. With these latest findings, the world’s researchers have come one step closer to answering the questions that we have been yearning to answer. How does our mind work? Where do our thoughts originate from and how do they travel from one part of the brain to the next?
