For decades, stunning ruins have remained hidden. The ruins of temples, palaces, and canals all tell the story of a nation of people who adapted to the conditions of their environment. These ruins have now been unearthed, and the tale they reveal is a surprising one.
The ruins of a lost city complex have been discovered in the jungle
Mother Nature does not use straight lines in her intricate designs, and so when LiDAR and satellite imaging revealed straight lines beneath mounds of earth that otherwise didn’t fit with the surroundings, interest was piqued. Experts were shocked at just how sprawling these ruins were once excavation began.
Carbon dating places these ruins as having been built around 800 to 500 B.C. The ruins show a city that was carefully planned into areas of worship and ceremony. The ruins strongly suggest a large population being the inhabitants. The size of this town or village shocked experts as the excavation process unfurled.
Where are these lost city ruins found?
The site in question is in northern Guatemala in the Peten Department near Uaxactun, which is known to have jungle foliage in the region. These ruins include Los Abuelos and adjacent sites like Pental and Cambrayal. All three form part of a triangular-shaped complex that spans multiple square miles.
Los Abuelos is best known and named for the two human-like figures found near its center. These are said to be the gods that were worshipped and followed here. At its center, a 108-foot pyramid was found with murals gracing the walls of the inner chambers. The canals that were unearthed point to how this civilization was able to manage water in this challenging environment.
Pental seems to have been home to a more political nation with a pyramid of its own at the center, which also had murals on the walls. Cambrayal’s canals stretch from reservoirs near what is assumed to be a palace towards city squares.
A lost city complex in ruin that defied expectations
Human migration and principles of settlement have always been hinged on water access, but these ruins fly in the face of that. It would seem that these early Mayan civilizations were able to adapt to their conditions by relying on advanced engineering.
The layout of these ruins shows a complex that suggests hierarchies and a level of organization that had not been attributed to the Mayans until these ruins were discovered. The city is also said to have been occupied during the Middle Preclassic period, a time in which Mayans were in small groups living rurally.
The ruins of a lost city complex add a new chapter to the story of the Mayans
The story these three sites tell is one of a civilization more advanced than what was initially believed. What was found at these sites shows a nation that used advanced thought to further its existence. All before the Classic period. From the canals to the pyramids, an advanced civilization carved out a life for itself under these challenging conditions.
These ruins are being carefully excavated, and as the layers are peeled back, more information is brought to the surface. The complex thought processes and advanced engineering being practised by this lost nation continue to shock and inspire.
The marvelous ruins of Los Abuelos, Pental, and Cambrayal stand as a testimony to the ingenious spirit of human beings. The stories this lost city complex may hold are still being investigated and should continue to tell the story of an inspired nation of people.
