Another recall, another concern in the automotive industry. The Volkswagen Group has issued a recall affecting 60,490 EV SUVs in the United States of America. The affected models are the Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron. The malfunction in the gear selection display could make rollaway more likely. This has got many concerned because VW’s recall is happening for the eleventh time and Audi’s for the fifth time.

Models and years affected by the recall’s scope

According to reports by Inside Evs, the automotive group did not specify in its recall report the number of units of each model that are impacted, although the 2021–2023 Volkswagen ID.4, 2022–2023 Audi Q4 E-Tron, and 2022–2023 Audi Q4 E-Tron Sportback are all impacted. However, the data filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the defect rate is below 1%. Also, a total of 60,490 are affected by this recall.

Recognising and comprehending the software error: Rollaway hazards and gear display failure

The main reason for this recall is a malfunction of software that stops the gear position from being properly displayed on the instrument cluster. What this means is that when drivers shift their vehicles into neutral (“N”), the instrument cluster may not show the “N” indicator, and because of that, it will increase the risk of rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged.

The issue is that in some situations, the “N” gear position might not show up in the instrument cluster when it should. Therefore, according to the NHTSA recall report, “the driver may not be able to identify the transmission shift position, increasing the risk of a crash and vehicle rollaway.” The vehicle could also accidentally be left in Drive when parked, or shifted to Neutral while in motion. It wouldn’t be good.

All this is dangerous for the drivers and anyone else close by. According to the New York Post, immediate repair action is required because the lack of a clear gear position indicator is a violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Following reports from markets outside of the United States, Volkswagen discovered this problem in August, which prompted the current recall.

Corrective actions: Notifications to owners and software updates

To fix this problem, Volkswagen and Audi dealerships need to perform a software update for the brake control unit because the culprit here is the malfunctioning software. Unfortunately, the update cannot happen in the blink of an eye; car owners will have to visit their local dealerships, be it VW or Audi and get it checked at no cost, of course. The update will fix the gear display problem and you will not need to worry about a rollaway.

On April 25, owners will be notified when to book a schedule or an appointment to get their vehicles checked. If the findings are correct that only 1% is affected by this, then perhaps we do not need to worry that much. As long as the cars are updated, then we can feel safer on the road. Therefore, when you see these models on the road, do not panic quickly because the issue will be fixed soon.

Repercussions for VW and Audi: Handling recalls in the age of electric vehicles

Recalls place car brands in a risky place, especially with VW, where it has happened more than ten times. We start to question their manufacturing process and whether it is more about quantity to have a return on investment than the quality that consumers would appreciate and last longer with. Notably, since its introduction, the ID.4 has been the target of numerous recalls, which is concerning in and of itself.

The more than 60,000 Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron SUVs that were recalled highlight how crucial software integrity is in contemporary automobiles. Manufacturers must continue to be on the lookout for and fix any potential defects that can jeopardise safety as cars depend more and more on intricate software systems in this technological era.
