Speeding is one of the main reasons for many accidents, injuries, and deaths. Despite the speed limit signs and warnings, many drivers seem not to adhere to them. As reported by Northern Virginia, a new state bill might put speed-limiting devices in place for careless drivers. Virginia, a state in the United States, is now taking a step ahead to eliminate speeding to make its streets safer for families and their children, and the community as a whole. Therefore, this state has introduced “intelligent speed assistance” to detect if drivers are speeding and prevent them from speeding by sticking to the speed limit in certain areas.
Virginia is the first state to boldly take this step. According to Northern Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin returned to the House with an amendment, and drivers guilty of exceeding the speed limit will be convicted and will need to install the new tech device in their cars that will stop them from speeding. This is being implemented because there are drivers who seem not to understand or care and keep speeding on the road.
This is how Virginia is going to prevent speeding before it even begins
These devices are called intelligent speed assistance, according to Northern Virginia, and they utilise a GPS and a speed limit scanner to detect where exactly the driver will be and to see if he or she is not speeding. Each region and location has a speed limit designated for it; therefore, the new device will detect if those rules are being obeyed. In fact, speeding will be impossible; their cars will not allow it once the device is installed.
Lawmakers within the state of Virginia are pushing for this initiative as they express it will protect the community and everyone else who uses the roads; it is also another technical way of controlling reckless drivers. Additionally, the bill passed, HB2096, claims that parts of Europe have started using the same technological concept and it is promising, with Virginia following, other U.S. states will adapt as well.
Furthermore, as reported by MSN News, if drivers are found or caught speeding, the judge can order their vehicles to have the device installed as a way to control their driving and take away their speed-driving privileges, or they could be jailed for a year, according to the Virginia legislation. The new law will fully commence and operate in July 2026.
Could this be the end of excessive road speeding as we know it?
If successfully implemented, then yes, we are looking at safer roads. The good part about it is that the device controls the car; therefore, if one decides to accelerate and speed, they will not be able to. This is a good initiative because, according to MSN News, speeding contributes to more than 10,000 deaths a year. Northern Virginia claims that there were 25,274 speed-related collisions in Virginia in 2023. These caused 13,474 injuries and 449 fatalities.
The bill has already passed and the technology related to it is expected to function as described by the legislators of Virginia. They believe it will lessen accidents, deaths, and injuries and enhance traffic flow as well. Questions around the effectiveness of the device seem to be getting people concerned that it will work on all types of vehicles and new ones too.
The tested device: “I found it to be sort of relaxing compared to the way I drove previously.”
Ian Reagan, a research scientist from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, tested the speed restriction similar to the one Virginia wants to execute and he expressed that at first it was different and the urge to speed was there; however, after changing his mind and perspective, he realised that it is “relaxing,” as reported by MSN News. He added on to say the speed limit device will help drivers avoid speed tickets or get caught on camera, which might lead to them being fined.
