The aforementioned study has found that the Green River was able to carve a path through the Uinta Mountains rather than flowing around them since dense crustal material sank into the mantle beneath the mountain range.
The entire valley that the Green River sits in was dragged downwards.
As this dip dragged the landscape down, the river carved a unique path through the mountains before the region’s mantle rebounded and came back up, effectively closing the gap and solidifying the river’s path.
