We love a good bargain as much as the next person, and with the upcoming Black Friday on 28 November 2025, it will be a bargain bonanza. In even more good news, 9 million people are to receive £300 checks before Black Friday. These checks will be a godsend, especially as some prices will continue to rise despite the upcoming bargain bonanza. Seize the opportunity, and check if you qualify for these checks today. It will make a world of difference in the 2025/2026 winter period.

Some prices will continue to rise

In the UK, Black Friday is an ideal event to shop for a variety of products at a significant discount. While this offers a great solution for one’s Christmas shopping and other purchases, it does not solve the challenge of affording other essentials, especially as their prices continue to rise. Winter time is usually accompanied by seasonal price hikes, which are especially notable in the following key areas:

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages
    • Domestic harvest cycles and international supply chain influences food and beverage prices
  • Energy and fuel
    • A higher heating demand results in higher energy bills
  • Recreation and travel
    • It is known as peak season in tourism, resulting in higher recreational, travelling, and accommodation prices

However, there is a silver lining to the dark seasonal cloud. According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data, nearly nine million people are to receive £300 checks before Black Friday. While the checks are not for spending during the bargain bonanza, they will still warm the hearts and homes of millions of qualifying people. Will your heart and home also be warmed this winter? Find out!

9 million people to receive £300 checks before Black Friday

The DWP is sending letters to millions of qualifying Britons this winter. This letter will confirm whether you will receive a payment from the Winter Fuel Payment scheme, as well as how much. Payments will vary between £100 and £300, and the majority of payments will be distributed from November through December.

Those who qualify can expect the payments to be automatically distributed to the same bank account used for State Pensions and other benefits. The only people who will not receive an automatic payment will be required to file a claim if:

  • They have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before
  • They have delayed their State Pension since their last Winter Fuel Payment

Please note that the deadline to claim these payments for the 2025/2026 winter period is 31 March 2026.

Check if you qualify with these eligibility requirements

The DWP has confirmed that five groups will be ‘ineligible’ for Winter Fuel Payments until 2026. To ensure that you qualify for payments this winter, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • You are a resident in England or Wales
  • You were born before 21 September 1959

According to the UK Government, if you reside in a care home, you can still qualify for the payments. You will only be ineligible if the following two factors apply to you:

  • You have permanently resided in a care home from 23 June 2025, or earlier
  • You are a recipient of
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), or
    • Income Support, or
    • Pension Credit, or
    • Universal Credit

The UK Government advises anyone to reach out to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if they did not receive a letter or their bank account did not reflect a payment by January 28, 2026. These payments are not something to miss out on, so ensure that you seize the opportunity to benefit as soon as possible. If you have any uncertainties or require additional information about the scheme’s benefits, please review the UK Government’s information on the Winter Fuel Payment.
