Summer is long gone, and thousands of Britons are bracing themselves for the upcoming cold and harsh winter. Fortunately, there are several winter support programmes to provide financial assistance in tough times. For instance, some families will be able to claim a £25 weekly payment in 2026. However, please note that only one group will collect it until March. Learn about the eligibility requirements to determine if you, too, will be eligible to collect additional money in 2026.

Soldiering through the frost: Plan well to deal with possible emergencies

Some people enjoy planning, particularly when it comes to the weather and its potential risk of home emergencies. While it may seem near impossible to pinpoint the exact weather predictions for this upcoming winter, an article by Firewood Fund has utilised meteorology science, historical climate data, long-range forecasts, and regional predictions to acquire the closest accuracy possible.

The verdict is in, and it appears that the UK will have to soldier through a much colder winter than expected for 2025/2026. The Welsh highlands, Northern England, and Scotland will face extremely low temperatures, whilst the southern regions will more likely face sharp frosts and perhaps snow. The following three counties are predicted to have the lowest temperatures this winter:

  • Northumberland, England, at -11 degrees Celsius
  • Highland, Scotland, at =15 degrees Celsius
  • Breconshire (Powys), Wales, at -9 degrees Celsius

With these extremely low temperatures, the energy demand and its accompanying bills are bound to skyrocket. Fortunately, a winter support programme will enable some families to claim a £25 weekly payment in 2026, with some eligible individuals able to collect until March.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed five winter support programmes that will pay out before Christmas. One of these programmes is none other than the Cold Weather Payment. These payments are typically distributed every seven days, provided that temperatures were recorded as, or predicted to be, below 0 degrees Celsius for seven days straight.

To qualify for this winter support programme, you must meet the eligibility requirements. You will qualify for a payment if you are a beneficiary of:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

You must also be a resident of either Wales or England. Unfortunately, residents of Scotland will not qualify for the Cold Weather Payment. However, some Scots may be eligible for the annual winter support programme known as the Winter Heating Payment.

One group will collect it until March

The Cold Weather Payment programme officially opened on 1 November 2025 and will operate until 31 March 2026. According to the UK Government’s information on the Cold Weather Payment, eligible individuals are not required to apply for the payment, as they will automatically qualify and receive their payments. There are three conditions under which you must contact the Jobcentre Plus.

You must contact the Jobcentre Plus if:

  • You are a beneficiary of
    • Income Support, or
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • A child aged five years or younger comes to live with you
  • You’ve had a baby

If you do not inform the centre of the above conditions, you will no longer qualify to receive Cold Winter Payments automatically. For those who do qualify, payments should be received within 14 business days.

So, in this battle of survival against the potential upcoming frost, there will be no need to soldier on alone. The DWP has ensured that numerous winter support programmes are in place to provide financial assistance to those who require it the most. For those seeking additional support, we recommend reviewing the requirements for the British Gas Energy Trust’s £2,000 grant, which will be available to all qualifying families before Christmas. May you and your loved ones keep warm this winter!
