ISA savers hit by HMRC crackdown, with 130,000 letters being sent out, indicating charges of £790 on average. HMRC’s mission is to ensure that all who have broken the primary rules of ISA will face the consequences of their actions, especially as the number of transgressors has significantly increased in recent years. Find out why so many ISA savers are being penalised by HMRC, and what has caused them to break primary ISA rules in the first place. Perhaps these penalties will make you think twice.
ISA savers hit by HMRC crackdown
Some people believe that rules were made to be broken. However, such a foolish notion could result in a significant penalty, especially if the broken rule belongs to the Lifetime ISA savers account. These accounts are designed to assist certain Britons in saving money to purchase their first home or for retirement. They have very specific guidelines that people must follow, or at least, were supposed to.
What was meant to assist young adults aged 18 to 39 has now resulted in some desperate and devastating results. HMRC is cracking down on some Lifetime ISA savers, with 130,000 letters sent notifying them of a significant penalty. The penalty amount will differ depending on a specific factor, but whatever the amount may be, no one likes to lose money.
130,000 letters sent with a £790 charge on average
HMRC has been keeping a keen eye on property owners in the UK, and thousands of landlords can now expect sudden fines or tax bills. Now, prospective property owners and others must beware, as HMRC is done playing ‘Mr Nice Guy.’ The basic guidelines of Lifetimes ISA accounts focus on when one is allowed to withdraw from the account, which is:
- To purchase your first home (at a £450,000 limit), or
- When you reach age 60, or
- You are terminally ill and have less than one year to live
Now, it has been determined that more people are making withdrawals and ignoring the abovementioned guidelines. HMRC has made it clear that failure to adhere to these withdrawal rules results in a 25% charge, with average penalty charges adding up to £790. As a result, Lifetime ISA savers were hit with withdrawal penalties totalling £102 million in the prior tax year.
From a noble start to a desperate and devastating end
According to the information on the official HMRC website for ISA savings, the usual Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are much more flexible than Lifetime ISAs, and the withdrawal rules will depend on your respective ISA. HMRC’s most recent figures indicated that there are presently nearly 1.6 million Lifetime ISAs, and that 129,200 were penalised in the prior tax year.
While you can earn up to £1,000 annually from the Government’s contribution to the account, some still believe that these accounts are unnecessarily complicated and do not truly help people with their savings goals.
“The latest data shows early exit penalties continue to soar, with savers being clobbered with £102 million of early exit charges. This is up from £75 million in the previous year and shows that Lisa is a product ripe for reform.” – Helen Morrissey, Hargreaves Lansdown head of retirement analysis
So, when following the Lifetime ISA account’s strict guidelines precisely, the savings accounts will actually be beneficial. However, we realise life is full of surprises, and sometimes they tend to cost us a pretty penny. In such a case, one must consider all viable options before dipping into a precious savings account. For instance, the DWP’s little-known programme is offering £812 to qualifying people before Christmas. This loan’s money can be used to pay for crucial expenses, and you only have to pay back the loan amount.
