The majority of us know what it is like to put in a hard day’s work for many, many years, as we try to build something lasting for ourselves or for a loved one or two. But what happens to it all in the end? This is a vital question, and some families may need a particular £82 document to make the answer to this question much simpler. If you do not have this documentation in place, things can become complicated for the loved ones you may leave behind one day. Find out today if you do have all your ducks in a row.
Certain documentation is irreplaceable in one’s life
With age comes wisdom, and the extra few grey hairs are without a doubt accompanied by some additional worries. One of the greatest worries that could keep one up at night is ensuring that one’s loved ones are taken care of and that arguments about a certain estate are avoided. A will could change that.
As per a report by Age UK, it also enables one to choose executors, guardians for children, arrange funeral requests, and may even decrease Inheritance Tax. If you do not have a will, the law will have full control over the distribution of your estate, which may end up being something you did not wish for. According to Martin Lewis, the founder of Money Saving Expert, there is one particular document that is of even higher importance than one’s will.
This document could be crucial for this reason
Lewis argues that this document is of utter importance, as it provides families with additional control during the unfortunate event of a loved one being unable to make their own decisions, whether it be as a result of an accident or an illness. In Lewis’ words, this loved may “lack the mental capacity” to make important decisions.
This is why a lasting power of attorney (LPA) is beneficial, as it allows you, as the “donor”, to appoint one or more people, or attorneys, to assist you with making these important decisions or to make them on your behalf, as per Lewis during his BBC podcast on the matter. He continued by adding:
” all your assets can be locked away with your loved ones unable to access them to pay for, say, your mortgage or even to pay for your care. What they then have to do is go through the nightmare of going to the court of protection that can take months or years is extremely stressful and costs a lot of money.”
British families should try to get it before November
According to the UK Government, certain eligibility requirements must be met for you to create an LPA, which are the following:
- You must be 18 years old or older
- You can make your own decisions
There are presently two LPA types, namely, health and welfare and property and financial affairs. You can choose either or both. Do take note that they will only be legally binding in England and Wales. Ensure you set it up while it costs £82, the government has warned that LPA fees will increase to £92 on 17 November 2025.
As we get older, we realise the importance of having all of our ducks in a row. This could be the result of the additional wisdom that comes with age, or due to the increasing concern of having years of hard work ending up having been for nothing. Whatever your reason may be, ensure that you apply for this vital document; the sooner the better if you want to save more than a pound or two. When it comes to the security of your assets and finances, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
