When it comes to life, we are all on a journey in one way or another. However, some journeys are more costly than others, literally and metaphorically speaking. Fortunately, free national bus journeys will be available for more than 235,000 people thanks to a little-known benefit for people with Blue Badges. Discover what the eligibility requirements are for this little-known benefit, or risk losing out on free national and local bus journeys for you and your travel companions (when required).
Little-known benefit for people with Blue Badges
When it comes to travel preferences in Scotland, public transportation has become one of the top choices. Data obtained from Transport Scotland indicates that more than 524 million journeys were conducted by public transportation between 2016/2017. Now, your public transportation preference may vary depending on which region you find yourself in Scotland.
In urban regions, bus journeys have become increasingly popular, with 75% of bus journeys being made between 2016/2017. Several factors will impact one’s choice in transportation, but perhaps a little-known benefit for people with Blue Badges will help persuade some otherwise. It has been confirmed that free bus journeys are available to more than 235,000 people if they meet the eligibility requirements.
Free bus journeys for 235,000 people
Transport Scotland has confirmed that some Scots aged 60 or older, or individuals with a disability, will be eligible to travel for free by bus around Scotland and their local regions. To claim these free journeys, one must be eligible for a National Entitlement Card, which will allow:
- Registered local and long-distance bus services across Scotland
- Any number of journeys
- Journeys at any time of day
- Free travel for companions (when required), including children under the age of 5
Another reason to consider using this offer is that speed limits in Scotland are being lowered to enhance road safety. While the lower speed limit is reportedly not expected to increase congestion, the jury is still out. Additionally, it encourages more people to walk or cycle, which may not be feasible for older Scots or individuals with a disability, especially over long distances.
National Entitlement Card eligibility requirements
According to the official statement from Transport Scotland, if you are aged 60 or older and reside in Scotland, you are already one step closer to being considered eligible. Blue Badge holders in particular will be deemed eligible if they provide:
- A copy or picture of each side of their Blue Badge
- The latest DVLA V11 vehicle licensing reminder
- The latest DWP DLA404
Blue Badge holders cannot apply for a National Entitlement Card without the abovementioned documentation. Please note that valid Blue Badges issued outside Scotland will still be accepted if it was issued:
- Anywhere in the rest of the UK, or
- By an EU member state’s authorities
Other people who may qualify
- Some DWP and Social Security Scotland benefit recipients
- Some benefit recipients who are hospitalised or reside in a care/residential home

- Individuals who are profoundly or severely death
- People who have been medically advised not to drive
- People with learning disabilities
- People experiencing a qualifying mental health condition for more than one year

Please note that in most cases, you will be required to provide documentation as proof when applying for a National Entitlement Card, which must be dated within the last 18 months, as well as confirm the length of your benefit entitlement. Applications can be completed online, by post, or through the council or the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, depending on where you reside.
