Christmas Bonus alert for 3 groups

Some of us are guilty of overindulging, especially during the festive months. However, even some of the biggest Scrooges in the UK struggle to save money during the winter months. This is of no fault of their own, as seasonal increases are not unusual, especially during winter. As electricity usage increases due to extra heating to fight off the cold, so do the electricity bills.

Other factors, such as increased travel and imports of seasonal food items, all contribute to increased cost-of-living expenses. Thankfully, a Christmas Bonus alert was sounded for three qualifying groups, alerting families that cash is on the way. Discover who will qualify for the bonus payments before Christmas, as well as why some are not too impressed by the payments.

Cash is on the way to reach families’ pockets

Families are about to receive an automatic Christmas Bonus soon. To qualify for the Christmas Bonus payment this year, the following eligibility requirements must be met during the qualifying week:

  • You must be a UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or Gibraltar resident
  • You must be a recipient of one of the following benefits
    • Pension Age Disability Payment
    • Pension Credit (Guarantee element)
    • Personal Independence Payment
    • Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance
    • Severe Disablement Allowance
    • State Pension
    • Unemployment Supplement or Allowance
    • War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
    • War Widow’s Pension
    • Widowed Mother’s Allowance
    • Widowed Parent Allowance
    • Widow’s Pension
    • Adult Disability Payment
    • Armed Forces Independence Payment
    • Attendance Allowance
    • Carer’s Allowance
    • Carer Support Payment
    • Child Disability Payment
    • Constant Attendance Allowance
    • Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance
    • Disability Living Allowance
    • Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate
    • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)
    • Mobility Supplement

According to the UK Government, the qualifying week is usually the first whole week in December, which will be 1 to 7 December this year. The Christmas Bonus aims to provide financial assistance to people with additional and higher expenses during the festive period. However, not everyone is too thrilled about the amount that will be distributed.

It is the thought that counts

Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria will qualify for the Christmas Bonus amount of £10. It will be a one-time tax-free payment, which will be automatically distributed to the same bank account that receives pensions, allowances, and benefits. The payments should reflect in bank accounts before Christmas. Speaking of bank accounts, this bank’s customers will receive £400 in free cash, so check the criteria!

As for the £10, while it is the thought that counts, a few people are not amused by the payment amount. The Christmas Bonus amount has been £10 since 1972. Many believe that it has long been outdated. Some argue that the amount does not reflect the modern cost-of-living expenses and label it as an “insult.”

This begs the question: Is it truly the thought that counts, or has the review of the Christmas Bonus and its impact on the public been overlooked for too long? You can be the judge. The UK Government advises anyone who believes they should have qualified for a payment, but did not receive one by 1 January, to contact the Jobcentre Plus office or the Pension Service. For additional information, please review the UK Government’s official statement on the Christmas Bonus.
