The UK Government will be spreading so much more than holiday cheer this season, as the DWP is sending £910 checks before Christmas! With less than three weeks to go, the additional money will be a most-welcome early Christmas gift, especially to those who need it most. However, as mulled wine and trifle go hand in hand with Christmas dinner, so eligibility criteria go hand in hand with any form of financial support. Check your eligibility today and find out when you can expect your payment.

DWP is sending £910 checks before Christmas

If autumn has taught us one thing, it is never to underestimate the cold clutches of the UK’s winter weather, as Britons experienced a taste of what lies ahead. According to the Firewood Fund’s summarised practical weather outlook, the UK can expect rain and intermittent frost throughout December, with several regions and counties likely to reach temperatures well below the freezing point during winter.

With more than 20 million Britons currently living in financially vulnerable conditions, this winter will prove to be more difficult to afford essentials and make ends meet. The impact of inflation on the cost of essentials persists, particularly food and energy costs. The increased demand for energy will further aggravate heating expenses, leaving vulnerable Britons increasingly concerned. Fortunately, the DWP is sending £910 checks before Christmas!

When to expect the payments

The UK Government is distributing several winter support programmes this year, including the £150 Warm Home Discount for eligible families’ energy bills. However, three particular DWP winter support programmes will result in you receiving checks totaling up to £910, and these programmes are:

  • The Christmas Bonus, which is worth £10
  • The Household Support Fund, which is worth between £130 and £600
  • The Winter Fuel Payment, worth between £200 and £300

The Household Support Fund’s payment date will depend on the information provided by your respective council. You can confirm the payment date by visiting your local council’s official website. The Christmas Bonus will be distributed on the same date as your qualifying benefit. If that falls on a bank holiday, such as Christmas Day, you will be paid on the first working day before.

Winter Fuel Payments are typically distributed throughout November and December, and the letter you received confirming your eligibility will explain how much you receive and when. Please note that eligibility is key, so confirm your eligibility by checking the criteria below.

These are the eligibility criteria

While the eligibility criteria may be more extensive for some of the winter support programmes, we have provided a basic guideline to give you an idea of your eligibility. To qualify for the Christmas Bonus, the following eligibility criteria must be met during the qualifying week:

  • Must reside in the UK, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands
  • Must be a recipient of one of the qualifying benefits, such as Disability Living Allowance and Pension Credit

The eligibility criteria for the Household Support Fund are:

  • Indicated by your local council, and may differ from council to council

To qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must reside in England or Wales
  • Must be of State Pension Age (Born before 22 September 1959)

Please note that the government has highlighted five groups who will no longer be eligible for Winter Fuel Payments. The list of groups is exact, and it is advised to confirm your eligibility as soon as possible to ensure you plan your winter budgets accordingly. For those who are not eligible for the DWP’s £910 checks, there are other winter support programmes and grants to explore. By staying up to date with the latest available information on all programmes, you can better navigate this winter’s higher cost of living.
