Along with the season’s greetings and all things merry and bright comes an entire list of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) winter support payments and bonus payments. In total, the DWP pays families over £1,000 in benefits before Christmas, and both parents and pensioners may qualify. Discover which benefit programmes are on the full list to find out whether you will also receive an ‘early Christmas gift’ this year. It’s certainly one way of getting someone to jingle all the way!
Can we afford to eat, drink, and be merry?
The countdown to Christmas officially starts tomorrow, and we can feel the festive spirit bubbling over. However, along with the feelings of excitement may also be feelings of anxiety due to significant financial concerns. These concerns are not attributed to just one factor, but to a combination of factors that includes increased spending on Christmas gifts and events.
Other factors that result in significant financial concerns this time of year include, but are not limited to:
- Cost of living increases due to the inflation rate of 3.6%
- Ofgem’s 2% increase in the energy price cap
- Seasonal increases in imports and exports due to seasonal demands
As a result, essentials such as food, rent, and electricity prices will inevitably increase, raising the question of whether we will be able to afford to eat, drink, and be merry this season. Fortunately, the DWP offers a comprehensive list of winter support payments and bonus payments available to eligible Britons. Find out more below.
DWP pays families over £1,000 in benefits before Christmas
Each year, for the past 53 years, Britons can look forward to the most-anticipated bonus payment of the year, and things will be no different in 2025. This payment is known as the Christmas Bonus, worth £10, and it is paid in addition to one’s winter support payments from other programmes. The other programmes on the DWP’s list to look forward to include:
- Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300
- Cold Weather Payments worth £25
- Warm Home Discount worth £150
- Household Support Fund worth between £130 and £600
People who qualify for all the above winter support payments, as well as the DWP’s Christmas Bonus, can expect a total of £1,085, and some may even receive their payments right before Christmas. Find out when you can expect your payments to ensure that you plan your monthly budgets for the winter accordingly.
This is when to expect your winter support payments
The list of winter support programmes all have their respective eligibility requirements that must be met before anyone can receive a payment. For example, the Christmas Bonus requires you to be a claimant of means-tested benefits, while one’s residency and age determine Winter Fuel Payment eligibility. Cold Weather Payments are reliant on temperatures of zero degrees Celsius or lower for an entire week.
That is why you are encouraged to confirm your eligibility, ensure your personal details are up to date with the DWP and your respective benefit providers, and to apply for winter support payments where applicable. In most cases, payments are typically distributed in line with your qualifying benefits (excluding the Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payment).
If your payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, such as Christmas Day or Boxing Day, you can expect to receive your payment on the first business day before, which will be 24 December in this case. As you get all your ducks in a row to ensure that you benefit from the DWP’s list of winter fuel payments this year, why not have a look at other charitable grants as well? British Gas Energy Trust has a fund that will grant up to £2,000 to all eligible families this winter. Perhaps you could also qualify.
