Europe’s top festive spectacle lands in the UK

There is nothing more nostalgic than celebrating long-standing Christmas traditions, especially a tradition as old as Christmas markets. According to Smithsonian magazine, the origin of this beloved tradition dates back to 1296 in Vienna, Austria. These markets were more like fairs and lasted for two weeks in December. In 1384, in Bautzen, Germany, a free market was held in December, allowing butchers to sell meat.

Since then, these markets have evolved into quite the festive spectacle, boasting everything from towering pine trees to twinkling lights, merry and bright. The stalls have become more grand, selling everything from local treats to luxurious Christmas delights. The UK has also joined in on the fun, with Birmingham’s Christmas market adding that touch of German flair and nostalgia.

100+ stalls and a touch of German flair

The UK has caught up with the magical flair one would expect from most European Christmas markets. In fact, the second-best Christmas market in all of Europe has been crowned in the UK. However, Birmingham’s Christmas market will be nothing short of magical! This market is the best in the UK, and is known as the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market, featuring over 100 stalls and that touch of German flair.

According to the Birmingham City Council, this German market is special because it is the largest and most authentic Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria. Visitors can look forward to the following this year:

  • Handcrafted gifts, toys, jewellery, and decorations
  • German delicacies, such as bratwurst, hot gluhwein, and schnitzel
  • The Big Wheel
  • The Ice Rink
  • German musical and Brummie performances at Victoria Square bandstand
  • Monday open mic performances

“The market, which is celebrating its 25th year, is a highlight of the season for residents and visitors alike, offering a wonderful day out for families and friends to soak up the festive spirit.” – Councillor Saima Suleman, Cabinet Member for Digital, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism.”

Birmingham’s Christmas market schedule

The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market festivities officially kicked off on 1 November 2025, celebrating 25 years of traditional German Christmas goods and entertainment. What made it more special was the coming together of Birmingham’s Lord Mayor and Frankfurt’s Deputy Mayor to switch on the festive lights in Birmingham. For those worrying that they may have missed the highlight, the celebrations continue!

The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market will be open daily until 24 December 2025, providing plenty of time to join in the cheer and joy of Christmas (and perhaps squeeze in some last-minute shopping!). The market will be open:

  • Monday to Thursday from 11:00 AM to 09:00 PM
  • Friday from 11:00 AM to 09:30 PM
  • Saturday from 10:00 AM to 09:30 PM
  • Sunday from 10:00 AM to 09:00 PM

If this market isn’t already on your bucket list, add it immediately! For those of you who are not too fond of large crowds, West Midlands Railway has used its historical train data to predict that 18 December is likely to be one of the calmer days to pay a visit. Furthermore, tomorrow, 2 December, will be one of the busiest days. The UK has several other Christmas markets that ought to be on your list as well, including the UK’s largest one-day Christmas market. After being cancelled in 2024, this one is not to be missed either!
