A shipyard crane is not really limited by what it can lift.

It is limited by how far apart its two feet can stand while it is still lifting that load.

Widen the span and the girder between the legs has to get deeper, which makes it heavier, which loads the legs more, which needs more steel again.

That loop closes fast, and it is where the ceiling comes from.

Every big shipyard crane in the world is a compromise struck somewhere along that curve.

Move the compromise and you change what a yard can build.

The span is the number that decides everything else

A gantry crane in a shipyard is a bridge on two legs, and a bridge cares about one thing above all others.

Bending grows with the square of the span. Double the distance between the legs and the girder in the middle works four times as hard for the same load hanging off it.

You can answer that with a deeper girder, but the girder then weighs more and most of the new capacity goes into carrying itself.

So designers usually settle for a narrower crane and accept what that means down on the dock floor.

What it means is that a hull has to be built in pieces small enough to fit under the hook, and every extra piece is another joint, another alignment, another weld done at height.

A wider crane lets the same hull arrive in fewer and considerably larger blocks.

That is the whole point of the exercise, and it is an assembly argument rather than a lifting one.

What is standing in that dock

The yard sits on Changxing Island at Dalian, on the northern Chinese coast.

Three cranes are going up over the same dock. Two of them are the large pair, and the third is a smaller machine.

Each of the three spans 840 feet between the rails, which is the figure that carries the record.

The two large machines weigh about 14,000 tons apiece as structures, and each is rated to take more than 11,000 tons in a single lift.

Hoisting height is 328 feet, measured straight up from the floor of the dock.

The third crane is lighter at roughly 10,000 tons and takes about 8,800 tons on the hook.

Where this actually stands today

The cranes are being assembled, not operating. That distinction has been lost in most of the coverage.

The steel is being bolted together on site now, and neither of the two large machines has picked anything up yet.

The yard itself has an unusual history. It was founded by a Korean group in 2006, went bankrupt in 2015, failed at auction repeatedly and sat idle until a Chinese chemicals group bought it in 2022.

Four years later it is among the busiest shipbuilders in the country by order intake.

A capacity expansion of about a billion dollars is running alongside, and a dock of roughly 3,900 feet by 480 feet is part of it.

The stated aim for the cranes is a rise of more than 50 percent in dock throughput, which is a projection and not a measurement.

Which record, exactly

The claim being made is specifically about span and about structural weight, and not about lifting capacity at all.

The heaviest lift belongs elsewhere. A crane at an offshore fabrication base in China has been rated at 22,000 tons since the previous decade, on a span barely half as wide.

So a wider crane is not automatically a stronger one, and the two numbers move independently.

Shipyard cranes are also poorly documented as a class of machine, since yards publish whatever suits them and nobody audits the figures afterward.

Records in this trade have a way of resting on a press release, the same way claims around a heavy lift or a very large machine tend to arrive unverified, as the maritime trade report notes in its own phrasing.

What a yard does with a crane like this

Block assembly is the whole reason any of this is worth the money.

A modern hull is welded up in sections inside sheds, moved out to the dock, and joined there. The bigger each section is, the less of that joining happens out in the open.

Work done inside a shed is faster, drier, safer and far easier to inspect than the same work done 100 feet up in an open dock in winter.

So a crane that lifts a whole superstructure in one piece is buying shed time rather than dock time, as the trade analysis of the yard’s rise describes.

The gantry cranes are not there to lift heavier things.

They are there to lift fewer of them.
