Five water companies in the UK invoked their right to appeal the final decisions of Ofwat, decisions which indicated what these five companies were allowed to charge their users at the end of the previous year.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was approached to assess Ofwat’s decisions regarding the prices of the five water companies. The companies maintained there was a rush to strengthen vital infrastructure, such as water pipelines, storm drains, and storage capacity, all of which had regulatory requirements under the controls, and they struggled to meet.

According to a CMA statement, an additional £556 million in revenue, or 21%, was provisionally allowed of the total £2.7 billion requested by the five companies. Now, the users of these five companies can expect a 3% hike in water bills. The hike will be an addition to the expected 24% increase that forms part of Ofwat’s original decision.

The increase in rates that can be expected
According to a report by Sky News, the hikes in water bills may not be the same across all five companies. Users of Wessex can expect an increase of 5%, resulting in average annual bills of £622. Users from South East and Southern Water can expect increases of 4% and 3% respectively. A silver lining for users of Anglian and Northumbrian Water is that they will have the lowest increase rate of 1%.
The CMA was tremendously against the unjust water bill hikes, with the Chair of the CMA independent panel, Kirstin Baker, stating:
“We’ve found that water companies’ requests for significant bill increases, on top of those allowed by Ofwat, are largely unjustified. We understand the real pressure on household budgets and have worked to keep increases to a minimum, while stil ensuring there is funding to deliver essential improvements at reasonable cost.”
We are certain that the CMA’s dedication will be appreciated, especially from State Pensioners who may have to kiss their Winter Fuel Payments goodbye. With energy prices already set to increase due to increased heating this coming winter months, this water bill hike is another extreme letdown.
According to reports, Ofwat will be replaced by a new major regulator, most likely due to the significant industry criticism that it has faced in the past.
