Major UK bank to shut 284 locations

Major UK banks are shutting down across 284 locations in the UK. These closures are a result of a ripple effect from the changing banking habits of customers and the new digital age. As more and more branches shut down, one major UK bank has taken a step into the future by releasing a first-of-its-kind banking app feature in an additional move to conform to the digital age. See the full list of closures that will be hitting in 2025 to find out whether your community will be affected by this wave of closures.

Conforming to the digital age

With the new digital age upon us, several changes have occurred, including the banking habits of customers. As a result, several major UK banks have been conforming to keep up with the new digital age. Unfortunately, this has caused hundreds of branches to either close down or to reduce operating hours, due to decreased foot traffic in branches, as well as significant operational costs.

A statement from a major UK bank confirms that several branches will be shutting down to conform to the digital age:

“Customers’ preference for flexibility and convenience has made banking on our apps the most popular choice – more than 21 millions customers are choosing our apps to do their everyday banking, logging in over 7 billion times a year.”

Major UK bank to shut down branches

The Lloyds Banking Group, which owns the Lloyds and Halifax banks, is set to shut down 96 Lloyds Bank branches across the UK. Shops have been shutting down on UK high streets as a result, including hundreds of Poundland shops, leaving several concerned for the future of the UK high street.

In response to banking concerns from customers nationwide, the Lloyds Banking Group has become the first major UK bank to launch the first-of-its-kind barcode cash deposits. This new feature will be available on the Lloyds app, and will not only help its transition to the digital age, but also improve customers’ banking experience.

“Mobile banking gives people 24/7/365 access to their finances. Customers can see all their money in one place, pay in cheques, apply for finance, manage subscriptions, check their credit score, message our customer support teams and much more.”
