A walking dragline in southeastern Ohio picked up 325 tons of earth in a single bite for 22 years and moved twice what the Panama Canal took out, and the only part of it left standing is the bucket

A mown field in the hills of southeastern Ohio, picnic tables, a gravel lot, a tree line.

In the middle of it sits a rusted steel bucket the size of a house.

A person can walk into the mouth of it without stooping and stand there with room to spare.

There is no machine attached. There has not been one for a quarter of a century.

This bucket held 220 cubic yards.

Each bite weighed 325 tons.

How a machine this size moves without wheels or tracks

A walking dragline this heavy cannot roll. Tracks would sink into soft spoil and tires would be crushed flat under the load.

So it walks. The body rests on a broad circular base that carries the weight while the machine is still.

To move, two enormous shoes on either side swing forward, set down, and lift the base clear of the ground.

The whole machine then slides backward a few feet, the base settles again, and the shoes reset.

It covers roughly 900 feet in an hour, which is slower than walking pace, and that is fast enough for a machine that spends its life in one pit.

It never turns around. It only reverses, one short step at a time.

What it was and what it took out

The machine weighed 13,500 tons and carried a boom 310 feet long, which is roughly the length of a city block laid on its side.

It cost 25 million dollars to build at the end of the 1960s, which is something over 200 million in today’s money.

Across 22 working years it stripped more than 608 million cubic yards of rock and soil off Ohio hillsides.

That is roughly twice the material excavated to build the Panama Canal, taken out by one machine rather than by a nation.

Underneath it all lay more than 20 million tons of coal, which was the entire point of moving the hill. The machine never touched the coal itself. It only removed what sat on top of it.

The coal was the product. The hill was the obstacle.

Why the law that ended it was not the law you would guess

A machine built for one job is only viable while that job is legal at that scale.

Federal surface mining rules tightened through the late 1970s, requiring operators to restore the original contour of the land they stripped.

Restoring a contour means putting the overburden back roughly where it came from, which changes the arithmetic of removing it in the first place.

The machine kept working into the early 1990s and then stopped, and it sat idle while a campaign ran to save it as a monument.

The campaign failed on cost. Preserving an idle machine of that size costs real money every year, for corrosion control alone, and nobody would carry it.

Nothing broke. The economics broke, and the law moved first.

What survives and why only that

The rest was cut up for scrap in the late 1990s, and the steel brought a few hundred thousand dollars against a build cost of 25 million.

The bucket was kept because it is one welded object rather than an assembly, and because it was the only part anyone would recognize in a field.

It stands now in a public park in Morgan County, on reclaimed ground that the same machine helped create, about 9 miles from the nearest town.

Records for lifting keep being reset by machines that live on site, as with a crawler crane that lifted 3,037 tons in a Chinese pit.

A bucket is a sculpture. A boom is a liability.

What replaced the idea rather than the machine

Nothing this large was ever built again for coal, and nothing will be. The last of this class came off the drawing board before the rules changed.

The direction of travel went the other way, toward smaller machines working smaller cuts under tighter restoration rules and shorter permits.

Very large single purpose machines survive where the job is still enormous and still legal, mostly in construction and offshore work.

The largest crane on Earth exists today for exactly that reason, because a nuclear station needs whole reactor sections lifted in one piece.

Single purpose giants only pencil out when the work is guaranteed, which is why the largest crane was built for one site.
