Shore cranes lashed to the deck of a heavy lift ship

A container crane is designed for one thing above all else.

To stand on a quay, perfectly level, forever, with its whole weight pressing straight down through four legs into concrete.

Every assumption in the steel follows from that.

Then somebody puts it on a ship and takes it across an ocean in December.

The structure has no idea what is being asked of it.

Neither, in a sense, does the ship.

The worst deck cargo anybody ships

Two things make this load unusually hostile, and they compound.

The first is height. A crane standing on a deck puts a large mass many stories above the waterline, and a ship’s roll is a rotation about a point far below that.

Which means every degree of roll swings the cargo through a long arc, and the force needed to stop it swinging arrives at the lashings rather than anywhere else.

The second is what that mass does to the ship itself.

Weight carried high raises the whole vessel’s center of gravity, and a ship in that condition rolls slowly and rolls far. Slow deep rolls are exactly the motion that loads a tall object hardest.

Then there is the structure. A gantry leg is a slender column, superb in compression and poor at taking a sideways load that reverses every few seconds.

Lose one lashing and its share transfers to the neighbors, which is how a securing arrangement fails all at once rather than gradually.

The ship and what was standing on it

The carrier ran 554 feet long at 26,502 deadweight tons, a Chinese flagged heavy lift vessel built for exactly this trade.

On deck stood two ship to shore gantry cranes, the kind that unload container vessels, each roughly 302 feet tall and 328 feet across.

Read those numbers against the hull and the shape of the problem is plain. Each crane measured well over half the length of the ship across its own width, and stood high enough to make the rest of the vessel look like a raft.

They had been loaded in northern Germany and were bound for Thailand.

The route runs down past Ushant and across the Bay of Biscay, which is among the roughest stretches of water in Europe and is at its worst in winter.

The cargo was standing up the whole way, held only by chain.

The night it came apart

The cargo shifted on the night of December 6 of 2024, roughly 58 miles off Cabo Ortegal on the Galician coast.

The Spanish weather service had a heavy weather warning running for the north of the country at the time.

Most of both cranes went over the side, and on the way they tore up the deck and holed the hull. The vessel lost stability for a period.

Spanish maritime rescue sent the tug Alonso de Chaves along with a rescue boat and a helicopter.

Nobody was hurt, which given what fell is the remarkable part of the whole account.

After assessment the ship made her own way into sheltered water near A Coruna and anchored there, and the photographs from the following day show a deck with stumps on it.

What the record does not settle

Reports disagree on details that matter for anybody trying to learn from it.

The load port is given as Bremen in some accounts and Bremerhaven in others, which are different places. The position is put off Cabo Ortegal in one and nearer Finisterre in another, and the dates range across three days depending on whether the source means the shift, the response or the arrival.

No cause has been published. Whether this was a lashing arrangement that was inadequate, a securing job done wrong, a weather routing decision or the structure of the cranes themselves is not in the public record.

The loss also gets paired with a similar casualty near Taiwan two months earlier, which is a fair thing to notice and not yet a pattern, in the way that any two heavy lifts can look related without being so, whether they involve crawler cranes or a purpose built working vessel.

Why they travel standing up at all

The obvious question is why the cranes were not taken apart first.

The answer is time and money at the far end. A gantry crane shipped in pieces has to be reassembled on a quay by a crew with a crawler crane, which takes months and needs the berth out of service for all of it.

Shipping one whole turns that into a lift off and a rail alignment.

The industry has done it for decades and mostly gets away with it, which is why the arrangement looks reckless only after a night like this one, as the photographs of the aftermath make plain.

What is on the seabed off Galicia is two cranes and the schedule of whichever terminal was waiting for them, as the casualty log recorded at the time.

The shore cranes were never the fragile part.

The chain was.
