Two blades 66 feet long came off a Donegal wind farm and roof a bike shelter at the head of an island greenway in Mayo, where the salt air they stand in is what they were built for

Almost nothing built for the outdoors is designed to survive the Atlantic edge of Ireland.

Steel corrodes there. Timber softens. Paint lifts within a season and coatings on anything galvanized give up soon after.

Salt spray, constant wind and permanent damp make a combination that eats through most catalog products within a few years.

Which is a strange context for a piece of rubbish.

Except that this particular piece of rubbish spent two decades in exactly those conditions.

Nothing had to be added to it.

What a blade already survived before it got here

A rotor blade is designed for a service life of twenty years or more in the worst weather its site can produce.

The outer shell is glass fiber laminate finished with a gelcoat, and it is specified against ultraviolet, rain erosion, hail, ice, temperature swing and salt.

Blades on coastal and offshore machines get a harder specification again, because the salt loading never stops.

So the material arriving at a greenway has already passed a test far more severe than a bus shelter will ever set it.

The shape helps too. A blade is a hollow airfoil with internal shear webs, which means it is stiff along its length and needs almost no supporting structure to span twenty feet.

Cut a section out, turn it upside down, and the curve sheds water on its own.

You are not building a roof. You are finding one.

The two sections and where they ended up

Achill Sound sits at the point where a bridge carries the road onto the largest island off the Irish coast.

It is the gateway to the Achill Greenway, a converted railway line that runs out along the shore, and it is where cyclists stop before or after the crossing.

Beside that stopping point there is a children’s playground, and the shelters were placed deliberately so that the two things work together.

What went up is a pair of twin structures, each combining covered bike parking with a picnic table underneath it.

Each has a viewing window cut into the side of the blade so an adult sitting under cover can watch the playground.

The county council paid for them, and the exposure at that spot is about as bad as Irish weather gets.

Where the blades came from and when

The two sections came off Barnesmore Wind Farm in County Donegal, in the hills above Donegal town.

They are Bonus B39 blades, each about 66 feet long, taken down when the machines there were upgraded.

That is a machine generation from the late nineteen nineties, so the blades had a full working life behind them before anybody cut one.

They then crossed the country, from the north west corner to the west coast, which is a haul of about 120 miles by road.

The shelters were installed at Achill Sound in September of 2023.

The firm that converted them works out of Ireland and has been doing this since 2021.

The details this story usually gets wrong

The wind farm name is the first casualty. It is Barnesmore, and it turns up mangled almost every time the story is retold.

The service life is the second. Twenty years is the design figure for a blade of this generation rather than a documented service record for these two, and the maker has not published when they went up.

The structures are also not pure blade. Seating and surfaces use a modified timber chosen for the same coastal durability, so the blade is the roof rather than the whole object.

And these are shelters, not bridges. The same firm has built load bearing blade bridges elsewhere, including a span in east Cork, and a bridge is a different engineering problem from a used machine being put back to work.

The same designers have since made a shelter and benches on a trail in Donegal itself, as the composites trade report describes.

Why this is not the answer to the blade problem

It is worth being honest about the scale of what this achieves.

A country the size of Ireland is facing thousands of tons of retired blade over the next few years.

Two shelters use two blades. A greenway bridge uses two more. At that rate the furniture route absorbs a rounding error of the national total.

What it does instead is demonstrate that the material is worth keeping intact, which is the opposite of the default, since the default is to shred it into filler or bury it.

Shredding destroys the fiber length that made the laminate strong in the first place, as the maker’s own project note on the shelters implies.

The two blades at Achill are not a recycling program.

They are an argument.
