As everyone is still trying to fight off the chills caused by the sudden cold spell from this past weekend, it seems as though the UK has gotten a taste of what lies ahead for this winter. As a result, utility bills will skyrocket. Fortunately, there could be payments up to £100 for claimants this month, and all they have to do is “look to the sky.” While some may think we are referring to a well-known winter support programme, this is not the Winter Fuel Payment, but an entirely different programme. Keeping the heat on this winter
This past weekend, the UK experienced one of its coldest nights for “winter 2025” so far, with ITV reporting temperatures falling to -12 degrees Celsius in some regions. While the sudden onset of the cold is expected to subside this week, Britons have experienced a foretaste and will have to be ready to keep the heat on this winter. As a result, millions could be facing severe utility bill headaches, especially when it comes to electricity usage.
The UK’s high cost of living has proven to be a significant challenge for most this year. Still, when you consider the seasonal price increases of most essentials, the financial outlook for the remainder of the year becomes quite bleak. However, there are several winter support programmes to guide us out of the dark and help us keep the heat on, and one is paying up to £100 for claimants.
Up to £100 for claimants
Naturally, ‘free money’ is not distributed without some conditions, and the same can be said of the Cold Weather Payments. To know if you’ll be receiving a payment, all you have to do is look to the sky, or even better, a news channel’s weekly weather forecast. Eligible Britons will receive these weekly payments if the temperature reaches, or is predicted to reach, 0 degrees Celsius or lower for seven consecutive days.
However, the temperature is not the only requirement, as some eligibility criteria must also be met to be deemed eligible for a Cold Weather Payment. To be eligible, you must be a claimant of one of the following means-tested benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based)
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Support for Mortgage Interest
How much to expect and when
According to the official UK Government information about the Cold Weather Payment, this programme will run from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026. For every full week of cold temperatures, all eligible claimants will receive a weekly payment of £25. That means, if an entire month reaches the qualifying temperatures, claimants will receive £100 in total.
Payments are distributed within 14 business days of the start of the cold weather period. You can check the bank account or building society account you use for your other benefits to see if a payment has been reflected. Furthermore, you do not have to apply for the Cold Weather Payment programme, as all eligible claimants will automatically be paid.
The only time you must report to Jobcentre Plus is when you:
- Claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, or Employment and Support Allowance, and
- A child under the age of five comes to live with you, or
- You’ve had a baby
As most of the UK collectively sighs in relief due to more sunny weather, it may not last long.
