The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent statement on Warm Home Discount, as thousands of people are missing out on the programme, and some may even lose their entitlement. The loss is less than ideal, especially considering the upcoming colder weather and its accompanying increase in energy demand. Discover what the requirements are to become or remain eligible for the Warm Home Discount or risk losing your discount for good.
Understanding the increase in energy costs
By now, most of us are aware that energy costs tend to rise significantly during the colder winter period. For those new to the concept, you may be in for a surprise when reviewing your upcoming electricity bills, so brace yourselves! Understanding why energy costs tend to increase may help you better plan your finances this winter. A House of Commons Library report attributed this increase to certain factors, which include, but are not limited to:
- Longer darkness hours increase lighting usage
- Colder temperatures result in higher heating demand
- Global wholesale price fluctuations influence the UK’s energy costs
- Geopolitical events may result in a supply and demand imbalance
Thankfully, there are support programmes, such as the Warm Home Discount, to assist with the higher energy costs. However, according to the DWP, people are losing out and must act now!
DWP issues an urgent statement on Warm Home Discount
The DWP has issued an urgent statement, as nearly 250,000 families may qualify for a Warm Home Discount payment. So many Britons are missing out on financial assistance worth £150. The programme’s goal is to ensure that people living on a low income and/or pension can afford energy costs this winter, especially as the demand is predicted to increase with the drop in temperatures.
These payments are a one-time occurrence and will be automatically reflected on the energy bills of all qualifying individuals. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, your electricity supplier will apply the Warm Home Discount to your bill. However, one group in particular is required to apply to the programme; otherwise, they will miss out on the discount this year.
