SSI beneficiaries in the United States are among the most vulnerable in society and most rely on their monthly payments as an essential or only source of income. The Social Security Administration (SSA) intends these funds to be used for living expenses, such as housing, food, clothing, and medical care.

To enable recipients to plan their budgets strategically and enjoy peace of mind regarding their regular payments, the SSA releases the schedule ahead of time according to a predictable monthly structure. You can find information about the April 2025 SSI payment schedule below.

The context of Supplemental Security Income benefits in the United States

The SSI program was established over five decades ago in 1972. In 2025, out of the approximately 70 million US citizens who receive some form of Social Security benefit each month, around 7.4 million of those are SSI beneficiaries. The target recipients of the SSI (Supplemental Security Income) are the elderly, disabled, or blind who have limited or no income or resources to support themselves.

However, some people who can work part-time or receive a reduced income may also qualify, although their payments will be lower than those who can’t take employment at all.

Eligibility criteria for SSI payments from the Social Security Administration

There are two considerations when assessing an individual’s eligibility for SSI: disability/age and financial need. These are the specifics of the qualifying criteria:

  • Age or disability: An SSI applicant must be 65 years old or above, or they must qualify as blind or disabled under the SSA’s definitions. For disabled adults, this means they are unable to take on “substantial gainful activity”, whether due to a mental or physical condition. For children, the definition of the disability must involve obvious and serious limitations in functional living.
  • Income and resources: An SSI applicant’s income, which could be in the form of pensions, benefits, or any other sources, must be below the limit set by the SSA. In terms of resources, an applicant’s wealth is assessed, which includes cash or money in bank accounts, ownership of property, or stocks (excluding one home and one vehicle). This value also needs to fall below a certain limit for a US citizen to be eligible for SSI payments.
  • Residency or citizenship: People applying for SSI must be citizens of the United States or qualifying legal residents.

How much are SSI benefits?

The maximum monthly SSI payment is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. The amount may be lower depending on an applicant’s income level, their number of dependents, any additional income from family members, their housing situation, or other factors.

The Supplemental Security Income payment date for April 2025

The SSI payments are generally issued at the beginning of each month. There are exceptions when the date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In April, the dates fall on normal weekdays, so payments will be processed as expected with no changes.

  • April 1: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits payments will go out on this day.

More Social Security payments in April

Here are the other SSA benefits that get paid in April, according to the Social Security payment schedule:

  • April 3: This is the day that people who receive both retirement benefits since before May 1997 and also get SSI benefits will be paid.
  • April 9: Those who receive Social Security benefits and are born between the 1st and 10th of any month will have their payments processed on this day.
  • April 16: This is the date for beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of any month.
  • April 23: Those born between the 21st and 31st of the month will be paid.

The recent Social Security Fairness Act may have an impact on Social Security beneficiaries’ benefits payments, especially certain retirees, who will appreciate some good news.
