The Social Security Administration (SSA) plays two significant roles in the United States of America. The first is to assign Social Security numbers to Americans. The second is to oversee the Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance programs that distribute benefits to beneficiaries every month. The best news awaits one group of beneficiaries, as extra SSA checks will be hitting accounts on May 30. Find out if you are in this qualifying group.
Extra SSA checks will be hitting bank accounts soon
Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are crucial to millions of Americans, as they function as essential sources of financial aid, accounting for 90% of income for 12% of American men and 15% of American women. This vital system follows a fixed calendar to distribute monthly SSA checks to assist beneficiaries with monthly budgeting. In May 2025, however, some beneficiaries will have extra SSA checks hitting their bank accounts sooner than they think. Beneficiaries can expect the normal Social Security and SSI distributions, and an extra SSI payment.
SSI recipients could receive two monthly payments a few times a year, however, the double payments are not additional money. They are early payments for the following month. The SSA typically distributes SSI payments on the first day of each month, but should that date fall on a weekend or public holiday, the SSA distributes ahead of schedule on the last business day of the previous month.
This schedule ensures that SSI beneficiaries can plan accordingly, as they will have their money by the first day of the month. Since June 1, 2025, falls on a Sunday, its SSI payment will be hitting bank accounts in May instead. The next month with two scheduled SSI payments will be August 2025.
This group will be receiving two SSI payments in May
This is who normally receives SSI
Adults and children might qualify for SSI benefits if they have:
- Little or no income
- Earn up to $2,019 of monthly income
- Little or no resources
- Have resources worth a maximum of $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples
- A disability, blindness, or age 65 or older
- Adults up to 64 years old with disabilities that affect their work for a year or more
- Adults up to 64 years old with disabilities that will result in death
- Children with disabilities that severely limit daily activities
If you belong to the group mentioned above, and your personal information is up to date on the SSA’s system, then according to the Social Security Payment Schedule, your SSI payment for June 1, 2025, will be issued on May 30, 2025.
This is how beneficiaries will receive their payments
Recipients of SSI benefits can expect their payments to be distributed in one of two ways. Beneficiaries with bank accounts will receive their checks through direct deposits. Beneficiaries who do not have bank accounts or prefer a more tangible method will receive their checks in the form of Direct Express accounts. The second payment for May will be distributed using the same method the beneficiary signed up for.
The second payment will be the same as the first SSI payment. For 2025, the maximum monthly SSI payment is:
- $967 for an individual
- $1,450 for a couple
The total amount and your eligibility for it may decrease based on certain factors, such as changes to your resources, marital status, and living arrangement (including entering or leaving a medical facility or incarceration). If you report your monthly wages accurately and keep your personal information up to date, you will continue to receive accurate SSA checks.
