The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a complex agency that can instill both fear and hope in millions of Americans. The IRS has been doing so since 1862, and it does not plan to discontinue anytime soon. Some citizens are bound to have Lady Luck smile on them this week, as the IRS reported an average refund amount of $2,945. As in many cases, only certain people will be as lucky, so we recommend checking today to see whether you’ll be receiving some extra cash just before summer.
The IRS reported an average refund amount of $2,945
As we said, the IRS may sometimes instill some hope. Millions of Americans have filed their 2024 tax returns or may have filed for an extension. Whatever the case may be, it means that millions of returns are now being reviewed and processed by the IRS and that tax refunds are being distributed. Many eager beavers who filed returns early may have already received their refunds, but we know that many are still anxiously awaiting theirs.
Usually, if you filed your return directly and opted for direct deposit, your refund is distributed within 21 days of your return’s acceptance, but some might have to wait longer. We know waiting might seem impossible to some people, but keep in mind that recent budget and staff cuts, as well as other factors, could delay this year’s refund distributions. Thankfully, the IRS has straightforward guidelines on its schedules and service tools to simplify the waiting process.
This is when you can expect your tax refund
On January 27, 2025, the IRS officially began processing the returns for the 2024 tax year, which means many taxpayers have already received their tax refunds. Taxpayers should note that certain factors can impact when you receive your tax refunds, such as errors in filing, the type of deposit you chose, how and when you filed your returns, as well as bank delays or outstanding government debts. According to the IRS Tax Refund Schedule 2025, some taxpayers can expect their refunds this week between June 9 and June 15.
Returns filed between May 1 and May 15, 2025
- E-filing with a mailed check
- Refund expected between June 9 and June 11, 2025
Returns filed between May 16 and May 31, 2025
- E-filing with direct deposit
- Refund expected between June 9 and June 15, but can be delayed until June 19, 2025
- E-filing with a mailed check
- Refund expected between June 13 and June 15, but can be delayed until June 26, 2025
If your refund is being delayed, we recommend you use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool to track your refund status. The tool applies to e-file returns and paper returns, making your life easier, and indicates the following statuses:
- Return Received
- Refund Approved
- Refund Sent
Some citizens might receive higher or lower tax refunds
It’s no secret that some people could receive higher tax refunds than others, and it could also differ from previous years. According to the IRS’s official filing season statistics, as of April 25, 2025, the total amount that has been refunded is $265.654 billion, which indicates a 2% change from 2024, when the amount was $260.562 billion.
More people have also filed tax returns this year compared to last year, which can also impact the amount you receive. The average direct deposit refund amount for April 25, 2025, was $3,023. However, the average refund amount was indicated to be only $2,945. These amounts take the total number of refunds that have been distributed into consideration, which was 90,216,000 on April 25, 2025.
We hope all this information has brought you some comfort as you await your precious tax refund. Remember that there is no shame in seeking assistance when filing your returns in the future, as it could result in you preventing possible delays, meaning you celebrate with extra cash before the start of summer.
