China wants to produce energy for millennia ― This is more than just wind turbines

Wind energy

China is about to improve its renewable energy infrastructure even more. After achieving a record of sales and investments in renewable energy over the last year, they are about to release a megastructure to ensure their dominance in wind energy. Known for being the country that maintains almost half of the world’s installed offshore wind turbines, China now owns another record, which is capable of changing forever everything we know about wind energy. With this achievement, China may provide an efficient structure to turn offshore wind turbines into an ideal solution to the production of clean energy.

China aims to become the dominant country in wind energy manufacturing

The race for the dominance of renewable and clean energy is about to reach another level, and a recent announcement made by a Chinese company may be determining for this new era. Besides being dominant in solar energy manufacturing, China is searching for the same spot with wind energy. With this project, the country may achieve a benchmark in the global energy transition.

With this achievement, China may consolidate its place in front of the United States in the wind energy sector. Once this revolutionary equipment starts to work, and after a decision made by the North American President, Donald Trump, which had frozen the approvals to onshore and offshore projects, the success of the Chinese strategy is almost secured.

A record-breaking wind turbine that may change everything

To ensure the achievement of this goal, China will deploy a record-breaking 25 MV wind turbines at the first national-level offshore testing base in Fujian province. This testing base also represents a landmark for Asian countries when it comes to offshore wind power, and happens more than 140 years after the world’s first wind turbine deployment. Led by this important project funded by the State Grid Corporation of China and China Huadian Corporation Ltd,  we are about to enter the era of the record-breaking wind turbines.

The facility, which became partially operational in December 2024, includes five 25 MW turbines and ten 20 MW turbines. Also, it is the only testing center in China that can perform type and grid connection certification. The first achievement can be perceived after the announcement that an even greater offshore wind turbine will soon be operational in the same ocean region.

The beginning of the transition to cleaner energy sources

According to specialists, this offshore wind power research center is one of the steps towards China’s transition to become a country with cleaner energy sources. Nowadays, their installations are capable of generating 39.1 million kilowatts with offshore wind power. Combining wind and solar energy, the Asian country will be able to generate 1.6 billion kW with cleaner energy sources.

Furthermore, China also helps other countries to achieve their transition goals by providing 70 percent of the wind power equipment installed worldwide. Combining onshore and offshore equipment, this solution for clean energy can be used as an example for countries that aim for a successful transition to clean energy.

A new record is about to be broken by the Chinese

With the advances through the research base, another Chinese company is about to unveil an even more powerful wind turbine offshore. Dongfang Electric Corporation has revealed an offshore wind turbine capable of generating 26 MW. The announcement also confirmed the new turbine as the largest in the world in terms of capacity and size. It has a blade wheel diameter of 310 meters and a hub height of 185 meters. Along with the test base and the new record-breaking turbine, Chinese companies also released another super wind structure in the middle of the ocean, showing that the wind energy revolution is just beginning.
