Old concrete blocks are becoming “five-star hotels” for native bees — gardeners are saving pollinators one hollow tube at a time
Concrete is one of construction’s least green materials — energy-hungry to produce, carbon-heavy by design. It’s not the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “pollinator conservation.”
Yet across backyard gardens, a quiet experiment is underway. Gardeners are drilling into old concrete blocks, packing them with bamboo tubes and hollow stems, and mounting them on south-facing walls where mason bees slip inside to seal their eggs away for spring. The material couldn’t seem more wrong for the job. And yet, somehow, it appears to be working.
An unlikely material for an ecological mission
Concrete’s environmental reputation is well established — and not flattering. Manufacturing it demands enormous energy, and the process releases significant carbon dioxide. Conservation-minded gardeners typically reach for wood, clay, or natural fibers. Not a cinder block left over from a patio project.
But concrete has one physical quality that turns out to matter a great deal to bees: it retains heat. That density creates a warm, stable interior — exactly what cavity-nesting solitary bees look for in a shelter. The material’s drawbacks belong entirely to its production phase. Once the block exists, repurposing it adds no new environmental cost.
Two species are most likely to move in. Mason bees emerge in spring, ranking among the first pollinators active each season, while leafcutter bees follow in summer. Both are native, solitary, and highly effective pollinators for garden plants.
Why solitary bees need a place to call home
Honeybees build hives. Solitary bees don’t. Species like mason and leafcutter bees search for cavities that already exist — hollow stems, gaps in dead wood, crevices in soil or stone — rather than constructing their own shelter.
Those natural sites have grown harder to find. Modern landscaping tends toward tidiness: trimmed edges, cleared debris, manicured beds. The organic clutter that once provided nesting opportunities has largely disappeared from suburban gardens, leaving solitary bees with fewer viable options.
When a female finds a suitable tunnel, she gets to work. She lays eggs inside, packs pollen and nectar alongside them as a food source, then seals the opening with dirt or chewed plant material. The eggs develop through fall, overwinter inside the nest, and emerge as adults the following spring. Plugged holes are your confirmation — a sealed tube means a female has been there and done her job.
How to build a concrete bee hotel that actually works
A hollow concrete block is your starting point. Pack the block’s opening with hollow tubes — bamboo, reeds, or empty plant stems all work — and you can fit up to 100 tubes in a single block. Some species, including blue orchard bees, tend to avoid structures with more openings than that.
Tube dimensions matter more than most people expect. Width should range between 1/16 and 1/2 inch to accommodate different species. Depth depends on diameter: tubes narrower than 1/4 inch should be 3 to 4 inches deep; wider tubes need 5 to 6 inches. Never exceed 8 inches — female bees tend to lay their eggs deeper in the tunnel, so depth directly supports the next generation.
One placement detail carries real consequences. Holes should sit at least 3/4 inch from the outer edge of the block, which reduces exposure to parasitic wasps that target openings near the surface. Alternatively, drill holes into a wooden insert sized to fit inside the block — same principle, slightly different execution.
Protecting your guests from predators
A bee hotel that attracts bees will also attract things that eat bees. Birds are the most visible threat, probing open tubes for eggs and larvae. Stretching chicken wire across the entrance can deter them without blocking bee access.
Parasitic wasps present a subtler problem, particularly in fall when overwintering eggs are most vulnerable. Covering tube openings with gauze during this period helps exclude the smallest species. Adjusting tube size alone won’t stop them — many parasitic wasps are tiny enough to enter almost any opening, making physical barriers far more reliable than dimensional tweaks.
Placement and garden design for maximum impact
Where you put the hotel matters as much as how you build it. A south- or southeast-facing position captures morning sun and keeps the interior warm and dry, while some overhead shelter — a fence, an overhang, a roof edge — protects against rain and prevents moisture from degrading the tubes.
Keep the structure off the ground and close to flowering plants. Foraging bees need nectar nearby, and a pollinator garden beside the hotel creates a self-contained habitat system. Distributing multiple compact habitats around your garden tends to attract a wider range of species than concentrating everything in a single spot.
Concrete — the symbol of human-built environments crowding out natural ones — quietly becomes part of the solution when someone decides to look at it differently. The block didn’t change. The intention behind it did. That’s a small shift, but pollinator conservation may depend on exactly these kinds of small shifts, multiplied across thousands of ordinary gardens.
