We live in an era where we’ve almost seen it all when it comes to renewable energies. But this tech will have you thinking, it’s just a pole. Well, think again, as it is a bladeless wind turbine from Vortex Bladeless Ltd.! It’s strange, it defies all odds, and it competes with other clean energy alternatives in all the right places. Thanks to this innovative design, we may be entering a new era in global energy.

Entering a new era in global energy

The global energy sector is slowly but surely transitioning to renewable sources in a joint attempt to mitigate climate change by reducing global carbon emissions. Renewable sources, such as solar, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, and wind, are all credible alternatives to burning fossil fuels. In recent decades, wind power has been one of the favorable alternatives for generating clean electricity. Unfortunately, traditional wind turbine designs are not without their disadvantages.

According to herox, some of the main disadvantages faced with traditional turbines include:

  • Wildlife impacts
    • Potential collisions can result in high bird and bat mortality rates, as well as habitat interruptions
  • Noise and visual pollution
    • Negatively impacts the local scenery
    • Disturbs nearby residents

Thankfully, a Spanish company called Vortex Bladeless Ltd. engineered an innovative turbine design aimed at solving these main disadvantages typically faced. It certainly looks strange, but it defies all odds.

The bladeless wind turbine design

It is strange to imagine a turbine generating electricity without rotating blades, but it is not impossible, thanks to a phenomenon called “vortex shedding.” According to the company, their design utilizes aeroelastic resonance, which occurs naturally in nature. Wind passes around the turbine structure, creating pressure vortexes. The wind speed determines vortex frequency, and if the turbine structure has a similar natural resonating frequency, it oscillates and harnesses energy. Electromagnetic induction converts this energy into electricity.

This design is called the Vortex Atlantis/Grand model, which has a height that varies between 9 and 13 m and has a power output of 1 kW. This turbine design is simple in concept and enables easy engineering, installation, and operation. According to the company, the Vortex model starts operation in wind speeds of 3 m/s, which is typical in urban areas. It features a safety device that automatically halts operation in wind speeds of 30 to 35 m/s.

When comparing the Vortex model to traditional wind turbines, it is more energy efficient, as it produces the same amount of electricity at a 45% decreased cost in low to medium wind speeds. This turbine is suitable for urban areas and protected areas, but can be scaled up for production in classic wind parks or offshore. This turbine has other advantages beyond its efficiency, including solving the impact of traditional turbines on birds and bats.

All the advantages of going bladeless

According to herox, the company’s model has many advantages. The Vortex Atlantis/Grand models are more cost-effective than traditional turbines because:

  • The blades are usually the most expensive components
  • Almost none of the potential damage is caused by wear and friction
    • Decreases the need for maintenance and thus maintenance costs

Other advantages of a bladeless wind turbine

  • They are completely silent
  • They are gearless and oilless
  • They require no braking
  • Operates in lower wind speeds
  • They require less space
  • They remain oriented
  • Longer life span
  • Safe for the wildlife
    • Birds and bats can fly around them without being sucked in or chopped

Vortex Bladeless Ltd.’s design not only beats traditional turbines, but it also compares favorably against hydrogen as an energy carrier, as it has a higher energy conversion overall and is much more cost-effective. Another problem with hydrogen is trying to differentiate when it is polluting and when it is not.
