While everyone seems to be looking forward to the futuristic city in Saudi Arabia and the vision of The Line, the attention seems to be slowly drifting away from the ultimate hydrogen city dream. With 2025 coming to an end, Saudi Arabia is showing the world how impossible it really is to realize this dream as it was planned. According to recent reports, The Line will be downsized, and the NEOM project will be going through major shifts in strategy. People remain confused between NEOM and The Line, and the difference must be established between the two.
Differentiating between NEOM and The Line
In terms of the project, many people confuse NEOM with The Line. It must be established that The Line is not the entire NEOM project. The NEOM project is a regional project in Saudi Arabia that will be made up of numerous renewable energy hubs and very futuristic industries. Along with the focus on renewable energy hubs, NEOM will also feature luxury coastal resorts. With NEOM, the plan was to create a large green hydrogen facility that would be responsible for producing hydrogen at a massive scale.
The Line is but one city within the NEOM project. It has gained much attention as it was believed to be a razor-thin, 170 km long, mirrored city that would be populated with nine million people. The difference is that The Line would not produce hydrogen, but it will run on the green hydrogen that has been generated elsewhere in NEOM city.
Where NEOM would be the clean fuel provider, The Line would run entirely on this green fuel. Oftentimes, the NEOM project is seen as being the same as The Line; however, it is important to understand the difference between the NEOM project in its entirety and the city called The Line.
Why are the plans to scale down on The Line?
The Line was initially planned to be a 100-mile city; however, now the city may only be a few miles long. The dreams of a nine-million population may never materialize since word is out that the population would be about 300,000.
The change in the original plans can be blamed on money, timeline, and the guidance of physics. According to current reports, Saudi Arabia took a plunge and decided to be rather ambitious with this aspect of the project. Since Saudi Arabia has overspent, the budget pressure has to be taken into consideration. Investing fully in the initial idea that was put forward may be impossible.
Already $50 billion has gone into the foundational groundwork; however, the time has come to pause some of the ambitious dreams. Aspects like the floating industrial city and the mountain resort may also be put on pause and delayed. The change in plans has become more necessary since the 2034 World Cup is fast approaching.
What are the newer plans for NEOM and The Line?
Although the decision has been taken to scale back on The Line, the rest of the plans with regard to the NEOM project are still underway. Thus far, hydrogen may be one of the core components that remain of this massive project.
While the plans to scale back on The Line seem devastating, the hope is that even when the city is reduced in magnitude, the city will still be rather unbelievable. Using renewable energy to create a hydrogen-powered urban area seems to still defy all logic. The plans are not only changing because NEOM could disrupt the Earth.
Saudi Arabia is strategically planning a new future
The Line won’t stretch across the desert as has been planned, but even with this futuristic hydrogen-powered city being smaller and more realistic, it still captures the forward-thinking message of NEOM. The entire NEOM project would have to be monitored more closely as many aspects of the project may change, and the overall vision may be adapted. With climate advisors also warning that NEOM’s discovery may put the world on edge, it’s not the end of the NEOM dream, as yet.
