On the North Sea a grain ship running at 9 knots tore a hole the size of a barn door in its bow against a wind turbine, and the machine it hit was back making power about 24 hours later

The night was running fine, the sea was open, and the ship was making a steady nine knots.

Ahead of her stood a steel tower in a farm of fifty five.

At around four minutes past eight in the evening the freighter hit one of them, tearing its bow open below the waterline.

Nobody aboard was hurt. The tower got a look from a helicopter and went back to work.

Why the tower wins that argument

The thing the ship struck is a monopile, a single steel tube driven into the seabed and sized for decades of wave loading and storm force wind on a rotor far above it.

Everything about the structure is oversized on purpose.

It is engineered against fatigue, which means repeated stress over years rather than one hard shove. A single push from the side sits well inside what it was built to shrug off.

The freighter was the smaller structure by a wide margin. She measures about 240 feet, carries around sixteen hundred tons deadweight, and was built in the mid eighties.

Her bow plating is shaped to part water. It is not shaped for a fixed column.

The wind turbine was surveyed from the air, found to have taken minor damage, and was generating again about 24 hours later. The ship needed a yard.

Seventy miles home with a hole in her

Investigators recorded the bow as torn open and pushed inward on the starboard side, including below the waterline, which meant water was coming in.

The master kept the engine running and turned for Emden. That was not obvious in the dark.

That is 70 nautical miles of open water with a hull that had already failed once, in darkness, with no way to see the full extent of what had happened, and no repair yard closer than the one he was steering for.

She reached the harbor at twenty to nine the following morning. Daylight was the first chance anyone had to measure the damage properly.

The gap in the plating came out at roughly 10 feet by 16, which one account compared to a barn door. Nobody aboard needed a hospital.

How the watch failed on both sides

German federal maritime investigators published their report in January 2025. It is blunt about what was missing on both sides of the water.

The ship carried two deck officers in total, the master and the chief mate, splitting a twenty four hour clock between them.

The master was alone on watch. Fighting chronic fatigue, he took the wrong supplement, and he fell asleep at the console.

The bridge alarm meant to catch exactly that did not rouse him. The course deviation ran for about fifty minutes before impact without anybody ashore acting on it.

At the wind farm’s own monitoring station the alarms had been muted, because they fired so often that the noise was treated as disruptive.

An average of six an hour, investigators wrote, should not overwhelm one coordinator, and the ship closing on them registered with nobody as a problem.

At the traffic center the officer of the watch was away and a neighboring center was covering a stretch of sea the report calls too large for one station.

The circle nobody was watching

Every installation sits inside a safety zone about 1,640 feet wide. Vessels are supposed to stay out.

The report says that zone seems to be outdated. At nine knots a ship crosses it in roughly two minutes, which is nowhere near enough warning for anyone to act.

So the recommendations point outward.

Watch the water beyond the zone, put radar into the surveillance mix rather than leaning on transponders alone, keep a relief officer available at traffic centers so the desk is never empty, and let operators call a ship directly when its heading looks wrong.

For the vessel itself, the investigation asked the operator to reapply for its minimum manning document and to sail with at least two deck officers besides the master.

What overlaps next

Lanes and wind farms are drawn onto the same water in more places every year. The density goes one way.

The lesson is not that the machines are fragile. It is that they are harder than the ships passing them, and considerably harder than the watchkeeping around them.

A tower back in service inside a day is the cleanest measure of that. The freighter sat in a repair yard long afterward.

These structures keep turning out to be more entangled with their surroundings than anybody drew, which is also why bats gather around rotors in numbers nobody predicted.

A hull was opened, a rotor paused for a day, and the only thing that failed for good was somebody paying attention.
