The famous American multinational corporation and technology company, Google, has made some significant enhancements since its founding in 1998. The IT corporation’s search engine is one of the most used around the world, and its operations thus require a lot of power. Now, it will be powered by infinite energy from just water in one state until 2045. The IT corporation will thus completely revolutionize its daily operations by dedicating itself to cleaner, sustainable power consumption.
The multinational tech company is going green
The world has been facing a skyrocketing power demand, especially as the population continues to grow exponentially. What many people may not realize is that our highly advanced technological era also requires a staggering amount of power. According to the Institute of Energy and Environment, one of the main culprits is artificial intelligence (AI).
AI models are primarily powered by vast amounts of fossil fuels, which are major contributors to climate change. Furthermore, AI training’s gigantic datasets require high amounts of energy for storage and transfers. Tech companies must implement sustainability measures; otherwise, AI’s expansion will significantly speed up climate change.
Thankfully, Google is one of the companies that realized the importance of going green. According to NPR, the company’s data centers utilized 30.8 million megawatt-hours in 2024, which is much higher than in prior years due to the rise of AI. This is why Google has decided to power its operations with infinite energy from just water in one state.
Powering its operations with infinite energy from just water
According to NPR, Google has set sustainability goals before, but has admitted its struggle to maintain operational carbon neutrality. To achieve its refreshed sustainability goals, the company signed a 20-year agreement with Brookfield Renewable. As per a statement by Brookfield, the agreement forms part of a greater strategy to provide transmittable clean power to the technology sector.
This infinite energy from just water will specifically come from 3 GW of hydroelectric electricity. According to the companies, the “hydro framework agreement” will assist Google in running its data centers and other operations with zero-carbon 24/7. The initial aim will be the Midcontinent Independent System Operator and the PJM Interconnection footprints.
Two hydro plants on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania will be part of the first 20-year agreement, which are Brookfield’s Holtwood and Safe Harbor hydro plants. These two plants have a total capacity of 670 MW. The companies are expecting an estimated revenue of over $3 billion. Gradually, step by step, America is turning its water into energy.
Other mega-corporations are also going green
Brookfield will be utilizing Google’s financial contribution to renew and re-license current hydro plants at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Holtwood is the oldest of three dams that were constructed approximately between 1905 and 1910, and Safeharbor was constructed in the 1930s, which means an upgrade or two is long overdue.
Google is not the only mega corporation that will be purchasing power from Brookfield. Other top power purchasers include Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. According to Utility Dive, Microsoft will be purchasing over 10.5 GW of Brookfield Asset Management and its Brookfield Renewable division’s renewable energy projects. This purchase will reportedly occur between 2026 and 2030.
As the world’s top multinational corporations and technology companies plan on refocusing their goals to power their operations with green power, many are concerned that necessary upgrades to repurpose established plants may not occur swiftly enough.
Another major concern to consider is that fresh water is already extremely scarce, especially in drier regions. Hopefully, the proper environmental management measurements will be put into place. If not, well, we guess we have to choose our battles. Other researchers are currently battling to power AI from space, but only time will tell when we will achieve that.
