The search for alternative forms of energy continues to drive various industries around the world. With an incessant search for new renewable sources of green energy, a new source has been discovered, and it could mean a big change for the future of the planet. Located underground in a North American state, this natural gas mine has proven to have the capacity to last for more than 100 years. Several industries could benefit from it, but it needs to be aware of its limitations since the same place has more than one explorable resource.
Recently discovered, this natural gas mine could be extremely important
With the world moving towards a more sustainable direction and looking for alternative forms of energy, technological innovations and discoveries are playing an increasingly important role. Among new devices capable of optimizing the production of renewable energy and discoveries capable of bringing significant improvements to old processes, a find underground in a North American state is proving to be extremely relevant.
The find, made in the Hugoton Basin, is close to one of the areas in the United States where oil and gas production is extremely profitable and well known. Initially discovered in 1922, the researchers had no idea of the immensity of the natural gas mine that lay beneath their feet.
A jewel of gold under the Kansas soil
Located underground in Kansas, the Hugoton mine extends from the West-Central Kansas region to nearby Oklahoma and Texas. The gas field is spread across eight counties in the region, namely: Finney, Grant, Haskell, Kearny, Morton, Seward, Stanton, and Stevens. The initial discovery was made in 1922, but the mine did not remain active for long, as demand for natural gas was low and the main search was for a new source of oil.
However, the site’s potential began to be exploited in 1928, when the first natural gas truck left the site carrying gas to the local market. In the following years, the reserve began to be sought out as a source of natural gas, and a series of pipelines for extracting and distributing the resource were installed.
According to recent data, the Hugoton gas mine has produced approximately 19 tcf of gas and more than 4 million barrels of oil. Besides being impressive, other places are also capable of producing a relevant amount of hydrogen.
A unique constitution that is difficult to find in other mines
According to some sources, the Hugoton Gas Field is a unique type of mine. It contains a stratigraphic trap that allowed gas to accumulate within the chase group. This trap is the result of a series of events, and it is also composed of porous limestones and dolomites.
Also, part of the reason for the high gas productivity and steady reservoir pressures is a water drive that crosses near the reservoir and helps to push the gas into the wellbore.
Another particularity of this mine is the high concentration of helium, which is between 0,3% and 1,9%. It makes Hugoton the largest helium reserve in the United States. The other components found in the gas produced at this mine are:
- 72% of methane
- 6,5% of ethane
- 3% of propane
- 1% of butane
Hugoton mine is still in operation today
As said by the Hays post, the Hugoton mine is still in operation today. A report made by the Independent Oil & Gas Service, in December 2022, reinforced that there were 50 active drilling rigs on the gas field location. With the renewable fuels becoming even more relevant during the last few years, this mine proves to be a place to rely on, and has been responsible for providing a significant part of the helium supply used for medical issues. Going further, other discoveries are equally significant for a green future, and this new giant is one of them.
