One of the most common pieces of social advice in the world is always be yourself. But what happens when someone else is trying to be you? The short answer is: Usually nothing good. In an attempt to address a rapidly growing problem in the U.S., a new Texas driving license will be introduced in 2026. The state has been identified as one of the most vulnerable places. Texans are advised to be fully informed of every upcoming change, as well as the expected date of implementation.

A new Texas driving license is coming in 2026

Millions of Americans are affected by significant financial losses each year as a result of identity theft, which has become a substantial and growing concern in the U.S. The prevalence of the issue is shocking. According to a report by 1031 Exchange Services, more than 22% of U.S. citizens have been victims of identity theft, and the crime has cost the country more than $12.7 billion in losses.

Of all 50 states in the U.S., Texas has been identified as one of the most vulnerable states to identity theft and fraud. Texans have already been urged to remain vigilant at all times, and this is why the Texas Department of Public Safety will be introducing a new Texas driver’s license in 2026. Below you can find out more about every change you should know about.

It started with a Texas driver forgetting her seatbelt — 29 years later the case still shapes how police can arrest drivers across America

TikTokers off the roads — First state to approve massive livestream ban threatens $500 fines and punishes even watching

Three Florida men dared to steal a stop signal as a prank — They ended in jail accused of manslaughter and faced 46 years after it all ended in an unexpected way

Every change you should know about

The new license will be made from the same material to comply with the standards set out by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), which is tamper-resistant and nearly impossible to copy.

Changes that will be implemented

  • A Texas gold star state seal replaces the more colorful silhouette background
  • Galloping horse images will be featured at the bottom
  • Alignment of personal information will be rearranged in an ‘easy-to-read’ format
    • Date of birth and license number will be in the same line
    • Issuance and expiration dates will have bigger fonts
    • The organ donor symbol will be moved

Another significant change to look out for is the REAL ID star’s design. In 2025, millions of U.S. citizens were urged to obtain their REAL IDs before the deadline, as those without them would have been prohibited from flying or accessing federal buildings, as they would not meet the security standards. The old REAL ID gold star will now be a laser-engraved black star located in the upper right corner.

This is when the new driving license is coming

According to the Texas House Bill 3426, the proposal to introduce the new driver’s licenses is currently halfway through progression. Presently, a date of implementation has not been formally communicated, but experts believe that Texans should expect the new licenses to become official in September 2026. Forms of digital identification are also rapidly growing in popularity.

Another bill was filed on April 16, 2025, which argues that Texas should evolve with technology by adapting and innovating to digital identification. According to Sheri Gipson, Chief of the DPS Driver License Division:

“The way driver’s licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety. This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen.”

While these changes mean additional administration to resolve this year, they are vital to ensure the safety of citizens’ privacy. As we await final communication of the progress of Texas House Bill 3426, we truly hope that these new designs will contribute to decreasing the number of identity theft and fraud occurrences. Crime does not pay, and it is unjust that innocent victims should suffer the consequences of someone else’s crime. Another state has greenlighted a new form of licenses, bidding goodbye to plastic IDs.
