NYC suffers traffic gridlock every year

NYC suffers traffic gridlock nearly every single day, leading to the cliché of miles of cars and trucks on the busiest roads in the Big Apple. Driving around the streets of New York City can be exceedingly challenging, and add to that the increase in traffic when the festive season rolls around, and the situation becomes untenable for some. NYC has taken steps to alleviate the pressure on the streets of the greatest city in the world with a new system that mirrors similar initiatives implemented across some of the most densely populated cities in the world.

Driving in New York City can often come with the expectation of long traffic jams

Most New Yorkers opt to take the subway to get to and from work every day; in fact, the subway is so popular in the city that many celebrities and Broadway stars are often seen using the subway. However, those who do use their car or make use of ridesharing apps often are forced to endure the iconic New York City traffic jams that have become as part of the city’s landscape as the Chrysler building.

City officials have noted the problem and have implemented a system to force New York motorists to reconsider driving into certain areas of Manhattan, which is the part of New York City that often has the worst traffic jams. The city has implemented a Congestion Relief Zone, in which drivers will need to pay a $9 charge to drive into certain parts of Manhattan.

London has drastically reduced congestion through its own congestion charge to enter the city

London was one of the first cities in the world to implement a congestion charge for drivers to pay when they drive into the most densely populated areas of the city. New York City is taking a similar approach, and as the festive season rolls through the New York skyline, the annual influx of tourists who want to spot their favorite NYC attractions brings with them a wave of congestion on New York City streets.

Drivers will now be subjected to a $9 charge to enter the Congestion relief Zone

City officials have stated that drivers who enter the congestion relief zone in Manhattan will need to pay an upfront $9 toll. The Congestion Relief Zone is located in Manhattan south of and including 60 Street, excluding the FDR Drive, West Side Highway/Route 9A, and the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel connections to West Street. With the state making some changes to the driving license point system, NYC is no stranger to change.

Notably, motorists and motorbike riders will only need to pay the toll once per day to enter the Congestion Relief Zone in NYC, while trucks and other large delivery vehicles will have to pay every time they enter the zone. City officials have pointed out that E-ZPass is the most convenient and stress-free method to pay the $9 toll, while mailing in your payment is also accepted.

New York City officials are attempting to ease traffic congestion this Christmas

With the annual influx of drivers entering the Big Apple in full swing, many have lamented the toll system that the city has implemented; however, city officials have noted that the Congestion Relief Zone will not only reduce traffic jams but also make the city safer for all. The official information from the NYC’s website provides a clear indication of where to drive to avoid the Congestion Relief Zone. Driving around the United States during the festive season can often be exceedingly dangerous, but thankfully, measures have been put in place to reduce congestion and, more importantly, make the roads a much safer place to drive.
