The fact that the Keystone State is rich in history and unique facts checks out. It played a significant role in founding the nation, as it was the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and was the second state to accept the US Constitution. The state is also a hub for innovation, with inventions like the potato chip, pretzel, and early computers originating there. Another great quality of this state is that it distributes $1,000 checks, which one qualifying group can expect soon.
Checks will be distributed to qualifying people
The Keystone State is none other than Pennsylvania. Some Pennsylvanians may qualify for up to $1,000 in relief through the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, which is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and Gaming. So spread the news, as applications for the 2025 refund cycle are open now, and payments are already being distributed.
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue started distributing the rent refunds in early May 2025. The program aims to bring some relief to people who struggle to make ends meet due to the increased cost of living. Qualifying Pennsylvanians can expect their payments via two methods:
- Direct deposit
- Only if you applied online and/or chose this payment method
- Paper check
- The default if you applied via mail
The total value of the check varies due to certain factors
The total refund will differ from person to person, depending on their 2024 income level and housing status. In a nutshell, the higher your income was in 2024, the lower your refund will be.
Homeowners
- Income of $0-$8,000 will receive $1,000
- Income of $8,001-$15,000 will receive $770
- Income of $15,001-$18,000 will receive $460
- Income of $18,001-$45,000 will receive $380
Renters
- Income of $0-$8,000 will receive $650
- Income of $8,001-$15,000 will receive $500
- Income of $15,001-$18,000 will receive $380
- Income of $18,001-$45,000 will receive $300
Homeowners in certain cities, such as Philadelphia, Scranton, and Pittsburgh, should note that they may qualify for supplemental refunds. Supplemental refunds are an additional $190 to $500 in relief to applicants with the most need. The refunds are automatically calculated for property owners with $31,010 or less in income whose property taxes are more than 15% of their total income. This means some might qualify for a rent refund check of up to $1,500.
This group will qualify for the checks
The refunds are meant for qualifying seniors, widowed individuals, and residents with disabilities who were homeowners and/or renters in 2024.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, you must meet one of these requirements to qualify for the 2025 refund:
- You must be age 65 or older
- You must be a widow or widower age 50+
- You must be age 18+ with a permanent disability
- You must have an income of $46,520 or less annually (excluding half of Social Security)
- You must have paid rent or property taxes on a primary residence in Pennsylvania during 2024
If you need assistance with your application, do not hesitate to reach out to the Department of Revenue or other organizations. Assistance is available at hundreds of locations across Pennsylvania for people who want to apply in person, but they are encouraged to apply online through myPATH for the fastest review process. Those who believe they may qualify must have their 2024 tax records, rent or property tax receipts, and Social Security income documentation on hand when sending in their application.
Good news for those who are still eager to apply, as the application deadline is only June 30, 2025, but early applications are encouraged to ensure refunds are received as quickly as possible. If your application was successful, your rent relief refund should be processed within 4–6 weeks of approval. Stay up to date with your status by using the Where’s My Rebate? Tool, or by phoning the Department of Revenue at 1-888-PATAXES (728-2937), and make sure you have the primary applicant’s Social Security number, date of birth, and application year on hand.
