It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Now that the dreadful tax filing deadline of April 15 is officially behind us, the IRS tax refunds are due in May, and some even sooner. Certain factors will determine how long you will have to wait for your refund, including the very specific refund schedule of the IRS. Some lucky ducks may have already received their tax refunds per the IRS schedule, but specific people are about to receive a payment in May.
The IRS tax refunds are about to be distributed
American taxpayers have (hopefully) survived yet another tax season, and now the brave survivors are curious to know on which dates they will receive their refunds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The tax filing deadline was April 15, and all taxpaying individuals and/or businesses had to file federal tax returns.
The April 15 deadline excluded some states and areas of the Southeast, since they received a welcoming extension to May 1 to file their tax returns after having to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene last September. Per the IRS, refund distribution dates may vary due to various reasons, including their specific refund schedule.
The factors that determine when IRS tax refunds will be distributed
According to the IRS, they will distribute most refunds within 10 to 21 days of filing when returns are submitted electronically with direct deposit, but factors such as filing methods, the filing date of the return, and the tax credits claimed may affect the refund distribution date. Per the tax preparation and software company, Tax Slayer, the IRS works according to a specific schedule and returns filed online are handled much quicker than returns filed by mail.
The method of receipt also affects the refund distribution date. Direct deposits will arrive much sooner than mailed checks. Certain tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC), also affect the refund distribution date.
According to the IRS refund schedule, this is how long refunds could take:
- Electronic filing and direct deposit: 1 to 3 weeks
- Electronic filing and check: 1 month
- Statement by mail and direct deposit: 3 weeks
- Statement by mail and check: 2 months
These people are about to receive a payment
According to the aforementioned IRS refund schedule, some lucky ducks already received their refunds between April 21 and 27 because they filed their tax returns online via the IRS website between March 31 and April 6. Others who have paid by check and filed in the second week of March may have received their refunds on Easter Monday, April 21.
If you are still waiting for your tax refund, do not fret. Many taxpayers are eagerly awaiting their tax refunds, as the revenue serves as a great economic relief for many people. With this being said, if you have not received your refunds yet, you may be one of the lucky people about to receive a payment in May.
If you cannot patiently wait, you are advised to utilize the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS official website. If you filed electronically, you should be able to use the tool to see your refund status within 24 hours after filing. Not only is the tool available 24/7, it’s also a much simpler way for taxpayers to access information regarding a refund without needing to call the IRS customer service line. For you hip kids, the tool is also compatible with mobile phones.
We shall leave you with a few last tips. Remember to always confirm the receipt of your filed tax return, and when checking your refund status, always have your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN) at hand, as well as your filing status and the exact refund amount. We have all our fingers crossed, hoping you receive your refund soon!
