10,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean, divers discovered the rarest octopus nursery on Earth—home to a golden octopus, a ‘ghost octopus of the abyss,’ and four species never seen before

Something truly unique happened over 10,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean.

Below the zone of light penetration, scientists found a location where mother octopuses gather to protect their eggs.

The mere fact that they discovered an isolated deep-sea nursery attracted sufficient interest. However, the inhabitants of the site were just as surprising as the nursery itself.

The team soon determined that the nursery was inhabited by species they had never recorded.

Which new species are lurking in the shadows of this secluded deep-sea nursery?

Where the deep sea hides its young 

The research team identified the location off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Expeditions were underway to study remote underwater mountains known as seamounts.

Using submersible robots, the researchers studied parts of the sea that very few people have ever seen.

During the expedition, they found octopus mothers nesting adjacent to low-temperature hydrothermal springs on the seafloor.

They were also able to observe young hatchlings emerging from their eggs.

Scientists confirmed that a region known as Dorado Outcrop was not simply a place where numerous octopuses congregated. It was an actual nursery where young octopuses successfully hatched.

Only a limited number of deep-sea octopus nurseries have been discovered to date.

The data collected during the research indicated that there could be other deep-sea octopus nurseries throughout the Pacific Ocean.

Additionally, these could serve as breeding grounds that were previously unknown.

Why this discovery captivated the scientific community

Deep-sea octopuses generally live solitary lives.

Finding large numbers of mothers raising eggs in one area is unusual enough to generate considerable scientific attention.

Researchers were also intrigued by the hydrothermal springs surrounding the nursery.

It has been theorized that warmer waters may allow eggs to develop faster.

This may provide young octopuses with a greater opportunity for success during their early stages of development. It is also the stage when they are most vulnerable.

When researchers returned to the site six months later, the Schmidt Ocean Institute confirmed that the nursery was still bustling with activity.

Beyond finding more species than expected, the Crustal Ocean Biosphere Research Accelerator noted that these findings support a long-held theory: deep-sea octopuses actively seek out hydrothermal springs to incubate their eggs.

By now, researchers had begun to realize they were studying something much broader than simply a single nursery.

The discoveries that stole the spotlight

The mystery lay in identifying what species lived in the nursery. Researchers immediately recognized that at least several of them had never been observed prior to these studies.

Their range was unexpected.

Even more surprising was the concentration of different types of octopuses in such a small geographic area.

What they found transformed the nursery from an intriguing discovery into an incredible one.

A hidden world beneath the seafloor

At least four new species of deep-sea octopuses were discovered by scientists in the area. The most significant finding was a new species of Muusoctopus called the Dorado octopus.

Researchers documented a distinctive golden octopus living in the community.

Another unique inhabitant of this area became known as the “ghost octopus of the abyss” due to its white or light-colored appearance.

These discoveries demonstrated that this nursery contained an extremely diverse group of octopus species. This effectively doubled the number of known deep-sea octopuses in the region.

The findings from the nursery in the Pacific Ocean provided much more insight than a single hidden breeding site. It provided a window into an underwater ecosystem in the deep-sea that researchers are only starting to understand.

As research continues, scientists are likely to discover many more remarkable species in the darkness below.
