May is certainly a month full of celebration and remembrance. Not everyone will be celebrating all the holidays in the US, but we know of certain dates that will have the most rejoicing. The SSA has confirmed new payment dates in May, and you may even end up with $5,108 more in your pockets. If you meet the SSA’s requirements and are deemed eligible for this benefit, you could be laughing all the way to the bank very soon!
Social Security benefits matter and this is why
Approximately 70 million US citizens benefit from the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) monthly retirement, survivor, and disability distributions. Beneficiaries usually receive their benefits in one lump sum, and the distribution depends on the beneficiary’s date of birth and the length of time they have been receiving monthly benefits.
The SSA also distributes Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which financially aids the elderly, blind, or disabled with limited income and assets. The SSI payments are usually distributed at the start of each month. The SSA confirmed that beneficiaries can expect a new payment on certain dates in May.
The SSA confirmed a new payment for these dates
SSI beneficiaries and beneficiaries who started claiming benefits before May 1997 were lucky to receive their payments last Friday, May 1, 2025 – That’s a good start to the weekend! We realize that many beneficiaries are still anxiously awaiting their benefits in May. Unfortunately, no benefits will be distributed this week.
According to the Social Security payment schedule, the beneficiaries can expect their payments for May on these dates:
- Wednesday, May 14
- Benefits for date of birth between the 1st and 10th of any calendar month.
- Wednesday, May 21
- Benefits for date of birth between the 11th and 20th of any calendar month.
- Wednesday, May 28
- Benefits for date of birth between the 21st and 31st of any calendar month.
- Friday, May 30
- SSI payments for June. This payment will be earlier than usual, as the regular payment date falls on a weekend.
If your payment did not arrive, the SSA suggests waiting at least three working days before contacting for assistance. Note that Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays are not declared as working days.
This is how much the new payment could benefit you
Your retirement age will impact the total retirement benefit that you can claim. The current full retirement age (FRA) of 2025 is 67, and if you choose to retire at FRA, your monthly benefit will be $4,018. Of course, not everyone wants to wait too long before retiring, but the earliest you can retire is 62, which will lower your monthly benefit to $2,831. However, your monthly benefits will increase significantly by doing just one thing.
According to the SSA, your maximum SSA payment can be boosted to a maximum of $5,108 if you delay your retirement age to 70. Beneficiaries should note that their monthly benefit will vary based on their lifetime earnings and the total years they have paid Social Security taxes. The average monthly retirement benefit for January 2025 was $1,976. The average is based on people who earned the maximum taxable income throughout their careers.
Income, disability type, and household size will influence SSI beneficiaries’ monthly benefits. In 2025, an individual can receive $967, and a couple can receive $1,450. Individuals who earn $2,019 per month or less and receive less than $988 per month from non-work sources may be eligible for SSI. The income threshold is higher for couples and parents.
So, if you were born between the 1st and 10th of any given calendar month, in six days, your benefit will be paid. The rest of you will have to hang in there for just a little longer before you can get your maximum payment. One thing is certain: May will have many people laughing all the way to the bank.
