IRS is sending 2021 unclaimed Stimulus Checks: Here’s how to get yours

Stimulus Checks

Americans who missed out on the 2021 Stimulus Check under the Recovery Rebate Credit may still receive their funds if they qualified but didn’t claim in their tax return in the 2022 tax season. The United States Internal Revenue Service doesn’t even require taxpayers to file a claim. Automatic payments will be distributed to eligible recipients identified by the IRS’s internal assessment procedures by considering their 2021 tax returns.

Did you neglect to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for 2021?

Around one million eligible taxpayers didn’t claim their Recovery Rebate Credit Stimulus Check when they submitted their tax returns in the 2022 tax season for the 2021 fiscal year.

This means that many people who weren’t even aware they had missed a claim will benefit from an unexpected payment from the Internal Revenue Service. Others who thought they had missed the boat by neglecting to claim the funds on their 2021 return will be paid out after all.

This is the last straw — New Yorkers automatically owe $45 as mandatory payment quietly begins on February

Social Security Disability payments are increasing — and for many Americans, it couldn’t come at a better time

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel clarified to the media:

“Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible. To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it.”

How much is the Recovery Rebate Credit and when will it be paid?

The IRS reports that the unclaimed funds add up to around $2.4 billion, and the decision has been made to distribute the payments automatically. Up to $1,400 was made available to taxpayers under certain qualifying criteria, and the amounts vary based on individual criteria.

Lawmakers approved three rounds of Stimulus Checks, two in 2020 and one in 2021. The payments were intended to provide financial assistance to U.S. citizens who didn’t receive the full Stimulus Check benefits during the pandemic. While most eligible taxpayers received their payments at the time, others who didn’t were allowed to claim the funds later through the Recovery Rebate Credit. Many people missed this opportunity as well, and this is what the IRS aims to rectify by disbursing the funds automatically.

If you haven’t received funds by the end of January, you’re probably not eligible

The payments have already started to be distributed and all funds are expected to have been sent out by the end of January 2025. Taxpayers who opt for digital transactions, which is the majority of filers, can expect the funds transferred into the account currently registered with the IRS. If a payment bounces back due to a bank account having been closed, the IRS will reissue the payment via paper check to the address on record.

Those who prefer dealings by post can expect their funds to arrive later than the digital transactions at the most recent address on file or the address listed under their 2023 tax return. A letter will also go out to all recipients notifying them of the incoming funds and explaining why they were paid.

In other tax credit news, Americans want to know what newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump plans to do with the Child Tax Credit as he starts his second term. His administration has the option to extend the current CTC, decrease it, increase it, or cancel it, and the ramifications for millions of parents and guardians are significant.

There’s another tax credit in the works for one state in particular. Families in the State of New York will be boosted with an increased Child Tax Credit if Governor Kathy Hochul has her way.
