Unexpected expenses can lead to a world of financial hurt.
Texas has the welcome status as the number one energy-producing state in the union, but recent developments over the last few years have seen the public growing weary of energy companies putting profit before the people. The state even offered “free electricity” for some.
How would you feel about an unexpected bill worth thousands landing on your doorstep?
How the reality of the Texas energy grid came to light a few years ago
Almost five years ago to the day, Texas was ensnared in a snowstorm of biblical proportions.
Winter Storm Uri covered the state in freezing rain and ice, leading to Texas. Governor Greg Abbott declared a state emergency on February 12th. The situation got fatally dangerous when the Texas electricity grid faced a surge in demand, leading to the system cutting out entirely.
While the grid came close to a complete state-wide collapse, up to 4.5 million customers went without power for days.
Public outrage was rife as Ted Cruz, the state’s Senator, opted to fly to Cancun, Mexico, while millions of his constituents were left to stave off the cold in their homes without any power or heating.
New renewable energy systems could have saved millions in Texas
The Texas power grid clearly has some issues to contend with. While the aftermath of the 2021 energy crisis in Texas led to some notable policy changes, the situation is far from over.
Texas produces more oil than any other state, so what exactly is going on as customers face regular outages and exceedingly high electric bills?
Millions have since turned to rooftop solar panel arrays to try to bring their monthly bills down. And state officials and energy customers thought they had the answer to their energy prayers when the state offered a new plan to drastically reduce the amount Texans paid for their power.
Advertisements offered customers new plans that provided “Free Nights & Weekends”, but a study has since found this plan to be misleading at best.
Rate discrepancies have emerged in the Lone Star State, and the public has been raising alarm bells as to the continued exceedingly high monthly bills that have become as much a part of living in Texas as supporting the Cowboys in the NFL.
The advancement of the solar energy sector has been a step in the right direction, especially as new revelations in solar power emerge.
Study reveals the real cost of energy in the Lone Star State
A study led by EnergyBot revealed that the actual price that customers in Texas were paying for their electricity was far from what was advertised.
The study found notable discrepancies that saw some customers paying up to 45% more than what their plans promised. Confusion was rife as up to 87% of locals prioritized energy savings, but the study found that 98% failed to choose the cheapest plan.
As many as half of the customers surveyed chose “Free Nights & Weekends” plans, which they hoped would reduce their monthly bills.
A dramatic reveal of the energy situation in Texas has come to light
Those who chose the free electricity plan actually ended up paying $1,400 more every year for their power, according to the report from Energy Bot.
The study has advocated for a state-wide Real Rate Calculation tool for customers to make use of to get the actual costs of energy right. While the world waits patiently for the limitless power of fusion, Texas energy customers have been left to fend for themselves.
The next global oil shortage is upon us, and Texans will be keeping a close eye on their monthly power bills. Are you prepared for your bill to increase?
