If you are someone who frequents the road, then you will be no stranger to the horrifying feeling you get after the realisation hits that you have forgotten your driving licence, especially when being pulled over. Soon, all of the UK will have to say goodbye to plastic in their wallets, as a digital driving licence pilot, among others, will land in the UK for the first time this year. The UK Government is officially moving forward into a new digital era, which will hopefully be more beneficial than anything else.

This is why the UK Government is going digital

Government-issued documentation and services are going digital. Besides the fact that some of us may be a little forgetful when it comes to vital documentation such as our driving licences or identification documents, other factors play a key role in why government-issued documentation and services are going digital.

According to the UK Government website, these factors include:

  • Digital identity solutions offer increased security to prevent fraud and unauthorised access
  • Improved processing efficiency, which streamlines government operations
  • Increased accessibility to government services
  • Increased convenience for citizens when managing their affairs

Digital platforms are also a vital part of the government’s strategy to modernise public services, encourage innovation, and build a thriving digital economy. The UK Government will soon launch the UK’s first digital driving licence pilot, which will form part of a greater digital government platform.

The launch of the first digital driving licence pilot

Brits will have newly enhanced digital ways to interact with the government, thanks to a greater plan of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The DSIT will manage the enhanced Government Digital Service (GDS) by utilising digital tools and data to improve public services and assist taxpayers in benefiting from £45 billion in efficiency savings. This great plan is known as the Plan for Change.

As such, the UK Government will be launching “Wallet” later this year, and one of its first documents will be the digital driving licences. Wallet enables the secure storage and easy access of government-issued documents on mobile phones. It will feature facial recognition checks as a security measure. According to the Science Secretary, Peter Kyle, the digital platform will enable people to verify their age quickly.

Several major banking groups have also gone digital, and this major bank will be the first to feature this 300-rule. However, this, along with the digital driving licences, will only be the beginning, as there will be more digital features to look forward to soon!

There will be more features to look forward to

According to a press release from the UK Government, Wallet will include vital documentation such as Veteran Cards, DBS checks, and all other government-issued credentials by the end of 2027. However, traditional physical documents will still be available to those who prefer them. The UK Government App will also be launched by summer 2025.

Benefits of the UK Government App

  • Improve navigation of the UK Government website
  • Improve access to government information
  • Easily complete essential tasks from a mobile phone
  • Offers a convenient and personalised interaction experience
  • Will include an AI-powered chatbot in the future
  • Feature GOV.UK Chat
  • Timely notifications and service reminders
  • Payment features

Technology has enhanced over the past few years. As such, a younger demographic has grown up with and become accustomed to digital platforms. First, major banking groups have been closing down branches all over the UK as a result. Now, we are saying goodbye to physical Government-issued documents. However, the transition to digital platforms is beneficial in saving time and energy and enhancing security measures. Just keep an extra car charger or battery pack on hand in case!
