Major automakers worldwide are in fierce competition regarding engineering the number one sustainable vehicle. There has been debate by automakers, customers, and environmentalists concerning electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen vehicles. Well, imagine achieving 956 hp without the hydrogen hype. A well-known vehicle brand in the UK has revealed a quiet pink contender set to own the roads with its impressive specifications. Will this vehicle end the hydrogen hype and become the latest trend?
A niche technology in the UK market
The mobility industry has been under pressure to conform to meet climate targets, which is why many people have become supporters of hydrogen vehicles. There has been a hydrogen hype, as hydrogen vehicles are zero-emission alternatives to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Other advantages include swift refuelling times and a long driving range, highlighting the convenience of hydrogen vehicles.
Yet, hydrogen vehicles are not popular in the UK market. According to ASM Auto Recycling, fewer than 300 hydrogen vehicles have been sold in the UK over the past twenty years. The following factors have contributed to their lack of popularity in the UK market:
- They are expensive in the UK; for example, the Toyota Mirai costs nearly £65,000
- Poor infrastructure in the UK makes long-distance travelling difficult
- Limited models are available
Additionally, EVs’ popularity in the UK has significantly increased, and a quiet pink contender’s 956 hp may end the hydrogen hype for good.

A British multinational vehicle manufacturer has unveiled its latest addition to its sports car and luxury vehicle brand. On 3 December 2024, Jaguar unveiled the Jaguar Type 00, a concept design that is the automaker’s next step on its transformational journey. Jaguar confirmed that its reimagined production vehicle will be an electric four-door GT, and the first will be produced in the UK and revealed in late 2025.
According to the automaker’s website, the Jaguar Type 00 will use Jaguar Electric Architecture, which could achieve a range up to 770 km WLTP and 692 km EPA. What’s more, by charging for 15 minutes, you add 321 km. And for lovers of pink, it comes in a colour Jaguar has dubbed Miami Pink. With the Tesla Cybertruck banned across the UK, the quiet pink contender is set to own the roads.

Jaguar has always considered its vehicles to be forms of art, and the Jaguar Type 00 is no exception. Loyal customers and fans of the brand can look forward to the following sophisticated and modern design features:
- Zero tailpipe emissions
- Long bonnet
- Sweeping roofline
- 23-inch alloy wheels
- Fastback profile
- A boat-tail to create a dramatic silhouette
- Dramatic butterfly doors
- Ambient interior lighting
Adrian Mardell, the CEO, had this to say about the Jaguar Type 00:
“The magic of Jaguar is close to my heart – an original British luxury brand unmatched in its heritage, artistry and emotional magnetism. That’s the Jaguar we are recapturing, and we will create the same sense of awe that surrounded iconic models like the E-type. Our journey is already underway, guided by our original ethos to ‘Cope Nothing’ – and the results will be spectacular.”
Will the Jaguar Type 00 be the end of the hydrogen hype? We cannot say with certainty, as several companies are still pushing for hydrogen. In fact, hydrogen screamers line up to rewrite F1’s future. Should the popular racing series completely transition to hydrogen vehicles, the future of sustainability in the mobility industry could have an entirely new perspective. Only time will tell who will win the debate of EVs versus hydrogen vehicles in the end. For now, it is safe to say that EVs remain the winning contenders in the UK market.
