Scotland is a proud nation with a history rich with ancient sites. Scots have a strong connection to their traditions, which is why change can be particularly difficult to embrace. Unfortunately, change is the only constant in life, and everyone must adapt. This could be challenging, especially with the Bank of Scotland planning on closing more branches near Glasgow, among others. Find out today which branches are on the list of planned closures to see whether you will be impacted or not.

There is a shift in the industry

The UK has witnessed a significant increase in bank closures, and the fact that more will follow is inevitable. Sam Richardson, the deputy editor of Which?, has stated that these closures are due to a “seismic shift” in Brits’ banking preferences. According to Kearney, shifting banking preferences are a result of the following:

  • Fintech penetration
    • Younger demographics, in particular, are opting for digital banks and fintech companies
  • Digital adoption
    • The demand for digital banking services has increased along with a rapid adoption of mobile and online banking platforms
  • Product ownership
    • Digital banking customers still own approcimately the same amount of products as traditional banking customers

One major bank that will be closing more branches is the Bank of Scotland. According to the bank, mobile banking are its “customers’ most popular choice when it comes to day-to-day banking”. The bank added that it allows for:

“24/7/365 access and the power to view, understand, and manage their money in one simple place.”

Change is inevitable. Some change is for the better, just like this new 300-rule that will be hitting a major bank soon. For other changes, well, the jury is still out. Over the past decade, more than 6,400 bank and building society branches underwent closures across the UK, as per a report by The Glasgow Times. According to consumer champion Which?, that is nearly 53 closures monthly.

The Bank of Scotland is no exception, as the beloved banking chain has undergone closures throughout 2024 and early 2025, and even more branch closures are being planned, particularly near Glasgow, among other. These closures will impact older banking customers the most, as they are the ones who normally prefer in-person banking service.

According to the official statement from the Bank of Scotland, Banking Hubs are planned in each of these areas. These hubs are a shared banking space owned by Cash Access UK and run by the Post Office. Some of these Banking Hubs will also have a Bank of Scotland Community Banker once per week to assist with banking services and account support.

According to a report by The Scottish Sun, Glasgow will be losing three of its nearby Bank of Scotland branches next year. These three branches are in Alexandria, Bishopbriggs, and Helensburgh, and will be closing on 3 March, 4 March, and 5 March 2026, respectively. Other areas will also be affected.

These areas will also be facing branch closures

  • Edinburgh (Corstorphine), October 29
  • Callander, October 30
  • Pitlochry, October 30
  • Thornhill, November 3
  • Moffat, November 19
  • Annan, March 2, 2026

The Bank of Scotland insists that the most convenient banking is done by utilising their app or online platform. However, the bank added that customers can now also visit any Lloyds or Halifax branch, as they are “part of a family.” The Scottish Sun also indicated that customers can perform basic banking tasks at their local Post Office branch. The news of these closures is not the only thing that will impact older Brits next year, as millions of pensioners in the UK will soon get a boost.
