This latest news will have you singing “Celebrate good times, come on,” all day long. Don’t believe us? Well, the DWP has announced a new boost for 2026, which means one group of beneficiaries will receive larger checks in the new year. What’s not to celebrate about larger checks? Before you start the celebrations with Kool & The Gang, ensure that you meet all the requirements to be deemed an eligible beneficiary.

All good things must come to an end

We hate saying goodbye as much as the next person, but not all goodbyes have to be bad. Millions of beneficiaries will soon have to bid goodbye to their legacy benefits. Fortunately, the farewell will only be temporary, as another benefit programme will succeed these legacy benefits. Some of the benefit programmes that the new programme will replace include:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit

While all good things must come to an end, remember that when one door closes, another one opens. And behind door number two will be a welcome boost for beneficiaries of this new programme in 2026. Discover which group will receive larger checks in the new year. You never know; it may be you who will receive a larger check in the post soon!

DWP announces new boost for 2026

The DWP has announced the transition of legacy benefits to Universal Credit, and along with the transition, beneficiaries can expect a new boost for 2026. The department confirmed that this particular boost was the most feasible approach to ensure that beneficiaries could meet their needs, as most were struggling to meet their needs on the current entitlement amount.

The government added that the change will enhance financial security and address the issue of poverty in the country. The government’s research indicates that 50,000 fewer people will live in relative poverty by the financial year of 2029/2030 as a result of the increase.

With that being said, Universal Credit beneficiaries can thus look forward to an increase in the Standard Allowance. A report by the House of Commons Library indicates that the government plans to raise the Standard Allowance above the inflation rate from the financial year 2026/2027 until the financial year 2029/2030. Hopefully, this news will make saying goodbye to the old legacy benefits a bit easier.

This is when the new boost will be official

Universal Credit beneficiaries can expect the Standard Allowance increase to take effect officially from April 2026. The current Standard Allowance is a weekly amount of £91; however, once the boost has taken effect, beneficiaries can potentially look forward to a higher weekly amount of £98. The final 2026 Universal Credit Rates (UC Rates) will be confirmed by the UK Government later this year.

If you are currently a legacy beneficiary, it is recommended that you make the transition as soon as possible. According to the Turn2Us Benefits Timetable Changes 2026, all legacy benefits will be phased out by 31 March 2026, the month before the Universal Credit’s Standard Allowance comes into effect. Therefore, if you do not want to miss out on this wonderful payment boost, ensure you start claiming Universal Credit immediately.

As you await the final confirmation of the new 2026 UC Rates, ensure that you remain fully informed of the ins and outs of the transition period. This way, you will ensure that you continue to benefit even as the legacy benefits phase out. There is also good news for state pensioners, as the Triple Lock guaranteed boost is hiding a bigger surprise than initially anticipated. As 2025 comes to a rapid end, it is at least some consolation to know that 2026 will have a few positive surprises in store for the UK.
