Buckingham Palace has issued a statement, giving bad and upsetting news to some Britons. There have been speculations regarding a Christmas market at the Palace this year. Unfortunately, these speculations have been dismissed. While we must bid goodbye to Buckingham’s Christmas market, there are still festivities to look forward to. In fact, Buckingham Palace will be hosting a special event for the very first time, and several goodies will be available for purchase. Discover what this royal event entails today!
A seasonal tradition as old as time
Christmas markets are a seasonal tradition as old as time. The very first Christmas markets originated during the Middle Ages in Europe, but it was not until 1298 that shopkeepers held a market for a few days in early winter. Fast forward a few centuries to 1982 in Lincoln, and the very first Christmas market in the UK was held. These markets took a few years to take off.
In 1997, Frankfurt Christmas markets established events in several cities, including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, and Manchester. They enjoyed significant success, and these markets quickly became a beloved seasonal tradition.
Unfortunately, the one Christmas market that everyone had hoped for will not take place after all, as confirmed by a statement from the Royal Trust Collection. But you can still enjoy a very royal festivity, as a new Royal Mews event will be kicking off very soon!
Goodbye Buckingham’s Christmas market, hello new Royal Mews event
For those who were hoping to enjoy a unique Christmas market, one at the Palace is certainly no longer an option. However, we recommend visiting Europe’s second-best Christmas market in the UK, as it will be returning to its original location for the first time in years! For those of you who were hoping for something more regal, the Royals Mews will be opening a pop-up shop for the first time!
The Royal Collection Trust confirmed that Buckingham Palace will be transforming the 200-year-old stables to host the festive Royal Mews Christmas Shop. Visitors to the shop will be able to purchase limited edition products, exclusive treats, and collector’s items. Examples of these products include:
- Ceramics inspired by Windsor Castle’s kitchen
- Handcrafted tree decorations
- Regal tipples, such as Windsor Castle pink gin
- Wine glasses giving a nod to one of Queen Victoria’s punch bowls
- Jewelry
- Luxury linen
- A Royal Collection Coat of Arms shortbread biscuit tin
The Royals Mews event will operate on these dates
What is home to historic horse-drawn carriages and vehicles used to transport the King and royal family members will become a festive fair. The Royals Mews Christmas Shop will officially open on 14 November 2025 and will remain open until 5 January 2025. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the care and conservation of the Royal Collection.
Britons hoping to come home for the holidays and visit the Royal Mews Christmas Shop may want to check their Christmas travel plans, as Britons will face new EU regulations across 29 countries. The new EU regulations will take some time to adjust to, but they will hopefully be successful in enhancing travel safety and security measures and addressing fraud issues.
While there is still some time left before you can join in at the festivities at the Royal Mews Christmas Shop, those eager for the collection may also seek it online, as all the items will be available to purchase on the Royal Collection shop. Even though the event will occur at the Royal Mews, please note that the Mews will be closed to visitors for the winter. For additional information about the Royal Mews Christmas Shop, please review the official statement from the Royal Collection Trust.
