With a 1,200 ton body and only nine minutes of power left, Britain’s last large walking dragline walked backward 160 feet into permanent preservation

On a foggy Sunday morning in January, a 1,200 ton machine twitched back to life in a flat Yorkshire field.

It lifted one enormous flat foot, swung it backward, and set it down in the mud.

That was how the last large walking dragline in Britain crept 160 feet across the ground at Swillington, near Leeds, to the spot where it still stands.

The machine had not moved in more than a decade, and it was making its final journey.

How does a machine built for one very specific job end up walking backward into history?

How a dragline actually takes a step

A walking dragline does not roll on tracks. Its weight, spread across a full circular base called a tub, would press conventional crawlers into soft ground. So designers gave it feet instead: two wide steel pontoons carried on eccentric cams, one on each side of the body. The cam lifts a foot, swings it backward and plants it, the body rocks up and slides across, and the sequence repeats.

That mechanism let the machine cross open ground with no road, rail or prepared surface beneath it. It crawled at a top speed of roughly 0.2 miles an hour and it traveled only in reverse, hauling itself away from the boom reaching out ahead. Every move it made in its working life went backward.

The machine stripped overburden rather than digging coal itself, using a steel bucket rated at around 25 cubic yards. What a person notices first, standing next to Oddball, is the boom: a lattice of steel angling away from the body, long enough that the bucket at its far end reaches ground the machine never touches.

The machine with the strange name

Built just after the Second World War at a plant in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the machine was christened Clinchfield and sent first to a contractor at Philippi, West Virginia, where it worked for four years before coming to Britain. It arrived in pieces, was assembled in South Wales, and went straight to stripping overburden from coal seams.

Its electrical equipment came from one American manufacturer while the other machines on British opencast sites carried a rival’s gear. The machine made sounds no other dragline in the British fleet made, and operators began calling it Oddball. The preservation group attributes the difference to the electrical equipment itself; other accounts say the odd noises came from American 60 Hz machinery running on Britain’s supply. Either way the nickname stuck and the factory name faded.

At its final site it weighed about 1,200 tons and its boom climbed high enough that standing beneath it feels genuinely small. It had been dismantled and rebuilt more than once, and at each site the job was identical: strip the overburden, expose the seam, leave the ground ready for the smaller machines behind.

The flood that ended the work

Oddball started work at St Aidan’s in 1974 and stayed until the site was inundated by a flood in March 1988, when an excavation wall roughly 230 feet deep collapsed and let the River Aire into the workings from both its upstream and downstream sections. The flooding took almost three days. One of the two draglines on site was at surface level under repair while the other had time to walk clear.

The mine still held workable coal, so the water was pumped out and the river and canal were routed around the workings in remedial works costing around $25 million. Coal extraction recommenced in 1998 and mining finally ceased in 2002, with Oddball rusting steadily beside the workings it had once led.

The site’s other dragline was offered for sale as a working machine and cut up for metal when no buyer came forward, leaving Oddball as the only large walking dragline excavator remaining in the country. Volunteers had begun organizing in 1997 to raise money for its preservation.

Nine minutes at 0.2 miles an hour

The volunteers faced two problems. The first was power: the machine’s General Electric drive needed a supply no cheap local connection could deliver, so a large generator was brought in for temporary power. The second was that parts had been stolen while the machine stood unused, which ruled out working operation along with the cost of a suitable power source.

The plan was one last walk, then a permanent stop. On a foggy Sunday morning in January 1999, Oddball walked 160 feet to its final resting place. At 0.2 miles an hour a move that long takes roughly nine minutes, the feet swinging and planting in the mud.

A walking dragline in Ohio worked at a far larger scale, its bucket alone rated in the hundreds of tons; Oddball moved less earth, but it is the one you can still stand under. The preservation site sits inside what is now an 880 acre nature park between Leeds and Castleford, where the flooded mine workings have been reshaped into open water and wetland habitat, with bittern, marsh harrier, lapwing and redshank among the breeding birds.

What 1,200 tons becomes next

The Friends of St Aidans care for Oddball on the site of the former opencast mine where it last worked, running regular open days and opening at other times by appointment. Visitors can sit in the driver’s seat and admission is free. The cab still holds the controls an operator once used to feel the drag wire go tight.

What the machine cannot do is operate. It has no suitable power source and the missing parts have not been replaced. Funding has come from the National Lottery, a science museum preservation fund, European funding agencies and other benefactors, and ownership of the machine passed to a trust set up jointly by the national coal authority and a city council. The volunteers’ work is keeping heritage funding directed at a stable structure rather than a running one.

What stands at Swillington is the object itself: about 1,200 tons of American steel that crossed an ocean, worked three British coalfields, survived a flood that remade its entire landscape, and then walked backward a final 160 feet. Its friends group describes it as the largest preserved walking dragline excavator in Western Europe. The wetland fills in a little more each season, and the boom casts its shadow over ground that is slowly becoming something the coal seam never was.
