600,000 years of consistent energy supply—that is what China has uncovered and the world is in awe. This energy discovery is called thorium and China has more than what they thought and because they have discovered it and are working to utilise it for renewable energy, it will be a key to a sustainable environment for about six centuries or more. Additionally, thorium is said to be more in quantity than uranium.

This underground deposit is said to be 1.1 million tons. Basically, it is not local but can be used internationally. As the world is thirsty for sustainable energy, thorium will definitely quench its thirst and present a viable path toward energy independence. As we are headed closer to a world that is replacing fossil fuels with something cleaner, we have more hope in our developments and sustainable discoveries.

The fuel that might take uranium’s place is thorium

Yahoo News reports that research indicates the nation’s thorium reserves are orders of magnitude larger than previously thought. The 2020 analysis demonstrates how thorium might transform the world’s energy generation and lessen dependency on fossil fuels. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), a geologist from Beijing who asked not to be named described the significance of the finding.

An Australian wind farm caused chaos when it switched from generating power to something quite different and ended up in court, and now operates under a nighttime ‘curfew’

Someone thought covering the Sahara with 10 million solar panels was a good idea. Now they’re creating dark rain clouds and reshaping the climate

Thorium was not a hidden energy substance; however, it has faced challenges with limited infrastructure and political hesitation and is mostly known to produce nuclear energy. which is why the use of uranium looked more efficient over the past years. However, tables have changed because, after doing their research on thorium, scientists found that it is abundant, produces less waste and most importantly, cannot be weaponized.

Thorium is silver in colour, and researchers say it can generate power 200 times more than uranium. Very different from uranium, thorium molten-salt reactors do not require water cooling, thorium does not melt down and the radioactive waste is close to nothing. This is why China is pushing hard for this energy substance to work because it is healthy for consumption.

How does China’s discovery affect the world energy competition?

Whenever such energy discoveries are made, they always change and reshape the energy sector, geopolitical power dynamics and the whole world in general. However, this all depends on how sufficient the renewable energy power is. For instance, hydrogen has been hailed as the future in both the automotive and energy sectors; however, the costs to produce it and infrastructure issues have caused some regions and companies to withdraw.

However, China’s discovery, on the other hand, seems to be shaking the global economy and I will tell you why. As I described before, since thorium is clean, readily available and abundant, it is a green light for the world to tap into this energy. It is giving a way to tap into green energy for the next 600,000 years. China’s discovery also makes us wonder if energy legends such as Saudi Arabia and Russia will rethink thorium.

Challenges and hurdles that China might face regarding this energy resource

I have mentioned all the good things surrounding thorium and how both China and the global community can benefit, but there are some hurdles that always come in the way of such significant developments and discoveries. A great amount of acid and energy is required to extract thorium from beneath the earth. Also, remember I mentioned before that thorium is great because it cannot be weaponized? Well, some experts are still quite concerned.

However, there seems to be a guarantee that such resources will not be made available for nuclear bombs at all. Having said that, this is a new day and a new dawn for sustainable energy. Since thorium is safer and easier to use than uranium, a transition to this level of energy supply will need global cooperation. from the legal side of it to the basic residential side of it for it to be easy and efficient.
