Finland announces major new helium discovery

Finland has just reported a major discovery that could potentially reshape the global energy market. The world has been consumed by calls to diversify the international energy sector and move away from the traditional energy resources of oil and coal. Decarbonization and clean energy generation have become the latest trend to sweep across the international energy market over the past few years. Finland is not necessarily known for its vast natural resources, but it recently made a shocking discovery buried ” just beneath the snow”, metaphorically speaking, that is.

A new discovery has been made by a major exploration and development company in Finland

The Nordic nation of Finland has become universally known for its vast natural beauty of snow-capped mountain peaks that make up the nation’s geographical landscape. What many may not be aware of is the fact that buried right beneath the snow, the nation has vast natural resources just waiting to be discovered, like a singer on American Idol.

Exploitation and development company 80 Mile recently announced that it has discovered what it says are “significant concentrations” of natural hydrogen and helium at its Hammaslahti project in Finland. The company noted that it discovered natural hydrogen concentrations reaching 1,000 parts per million and helium concentrations reaching up to 8.90% at the Hammaslahti well.

“The detection of hydrogen and helium at Hammaslahti is a major development for 80 Mile, reinforcing the exceptional potential of this region for industrial gas resources.” – Eric Sondergaard, Managing Director of 80 Mile

Notably, the company said that these discoveries of helium and hydrogen mark the advancement of its exploration efforts at the site and pave the path towards extracting the helium and hydrogen in the near future. It also notes that these discoveries highlight the potential of the Hammaslahti region to supply industrial gas resources to the nation.

The discovery marks the first documented find of helium at the Hammaslahti project in Finland

80 Mile noted that the discovery of helium was the first documented find at the historic Hammaslahti wells, and that the process to extract said helium can now begin. Helium is an important gas used in a variety of applications and industries across the world. Finland is now perfectly positioned to develop helium gas infrastructure that will boost the nation’s capacity for the natural gas resource.

The company noted that the discovery also places Finland in a unique position to increase its hydrogen production capacity, as surface sampling at two historical drill holes discovered vast troves of the energy resource just beneath the surface. Discovering hidden energy resources has been a welcome addition to Finland’s energy ambitions as the nation aims to reach net-zero by 2035.

“Hydrogen is a key component in the global shift towards cleaner energy, and the presence of helium – an increasingly critical resource for advanced technologies- further enhances the strategic value of this project. These results underscore the significant opportunities that lie ahead for Hammaslahti, and we remain fully committed to expanding our exploration efforts and delivering meaningful, long-term value for our shareholders.” – Eric Sondergaard, Managing Director of 80 Mile

80 Mile now plans to accelerate exploration efforts in the Hammaslahti region

The company has stated that the discovery of helium and hydrogen enables it to drastically accelerate and expedite its exploration activities in the Hammaslahti region. Seeing as though we have only scratched the surface of exploring our planet and its vast and mysteriously hidden energy resources, the future of our species depends on the efficient and safe extraction of said resources to establish a new era of exploration for the international energy market. Finland will need to pragmatically consider its next move to extract the helium and hydrogen.
