First solar train is coming soon. Renewable sources of fuel have been trending in the past couple of years. With cars running on multiple types of fuels, such as electric powertrains, hydrogen, and hybrid engines, becoming a normal thing. As personal vehicles evolve, public transportation needs to keep up, and the new project coming to California in 2026 can change everything, especially because it would be powered by the sun, a fuel that it was here, on Earth, before – and will be here after.

Sun has been used as a “fuel” source since 1954

Renewable energy sources are now essential to keeping modern industries and cities running. Solar panels, hydroelectric plants, and thermal energy are replacing oil-based power in many regions as the world moves toward cleaner solutions. However, in much of the Middle East, petrol remains a key resource. It continues to fuel local economies and supply energy to some of the wealthiest cities in the region.

The sun can be harmful, but it’s also a powerful source of clean energy. Solar panels, first developed in 1954, have turned sunlight into a practical solution for generating electricity. In regions with intense sunlight, such as the Middle East, this technology is gaining ground as an alternative for powering homes – now, these types of technologies are coming to the new “solar train”.

California’s solar train is finally coming in 2026?

California’s new high-speed solar train is expected to become the first in the world to run entirely on solar power. The network will cover 1,287 kilometers across the U.S. It’s a project that’s been in the works since 2008, when the original cost estimate was $33 billion. But delays and new challenges have pushed that number up — the current estimate sits at $128 billion. Last month, officials confirmed the train will run only on solar energy once it’s finished. Elon Musk called it “a bullet train that is one of the most expensive per mile.”

To power it, the state will need 44 megawatts of energy, generated by 552 acres of solar panels — about 417 football fields. The solar train will also carry batteries onboard, with capacity to store 62 megawatt hours of power. Most of that energy will drive the train, which is planned to reach speeds of up to 354 km/h. Some of it will also be used to keep systems running in case of supply problems, helping the train stay operational even if sunlight is limited.

The first phase will cover hundreds of kilometers

Construction is being done in 10 phases. Phase 1 will cover 836 kilometers across California. Once complete, the train will link cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In the long run, there are plans to expand into other U.S. cities and even Vancouver, Canada.

Since its start in 2008, the project has faced criticism. People questioned why the solar train route cuts through California’s Central Valley. Officials said the choice was strategic – aiming to drive economic growth in one of the state’s less wealthy areas. Much of the rising cost is due to environmental approvals and land deals. Since most of the track crosses private land, negotiations with owners and local governments have already cost $1.3 billion.

California hopes the project will be fully functioning by 2030

If all goes to plan, the train should be operational by 2030. The solar energy system is set to be ready by 2026. When it launches, it’ll be the first high-speed solar train powered fully by the sun. Whether it sets a global trend or not – that’s what many are waiting to see. This could beat Elon Musk’s Hyperloop vision. With this initiative coming from the state, it could access funding more easily – something the businessmen never got, even applying for governmental funding over the years.
